There were a lot of recycling based activities that took place around the school last week for National Recycling Week.  A big shout out to all the students, staff and families who got on board and brought this important matter to the forefront.

Students across the school were offered the opportunity to take part in the following activities:

Nude Food:

As part of National Recycling Week we are encouraging families to send in lunchboxes full of nude food.  Check out what some of our students are coming to school with!  YUM!!

Waste Audit:

On Monday, Simon and a group of wonderful waste crusaders embarked upon a waste audit where we were wanting to find out how much of our landfill should actually be recycled.  Our group of 10 students spent the whole day dividing our waste into the four categories of soft plastic, paper/cardboard, food scraps, co-mingle and landfill.  The results were rather staggering:

Needless to say, we will be looking into how we can more successfully recycle at Buninyong Primary School.

Competition winners:

Last week we ran a competition where students can guess the percentage of waste that our school throws into landfill each week that could be recycled. After our waste audit we were able to work out that as a school we threw out 91.4% of recyclable waste.

We had a wonderful amount of entries and as a result we had four winners all guessing 90%.  Our congratulations goes to the following students who will be able to choose three friends and help Simon in the garden for part of their school day:

  • Caleb L (PKM)
  • Aria C (PKM)
  • Elise H (5CC)
  • Ethan G (3BB)

Shout outs:

A big shout out to the people and companies that made our National Recycling Week possible:

  • Sanne and the Suez Team – for their kind donation of three co-mingled bins and support with our rubbish collection plan
  • Leanne and the Delacombe Bunnings Team – for donating gloves and aprons for our rubbish audit – we definitely needed these!!
  • Craig and the team at BRI for helping us replace our broken bin and bin lids
  • Our waste warriors – Jack H, Matt Ob, Connor B, Oscar W, Hamish B, Matt S, Kaiya M, Tilly G, Ella M, Fraser D and Harvey W.  You stars!!

Bunnings Donations:

How lucky are we!  Bunnings Delacombe have again come through with some wonderful goodies for our garden and sustainability projects.  We would like to say a big thank you for the bin, post hole diggers, seeds, tree, garden beds, bird baths and teacher buckets that will be put to good use across both campuses.  Addition to these items, Bunnings Delacombe also donated two ‘Graduation Trees’ for both of our campuses.  Given the strange year we’ve had, these weeping cherries will stand as a reminder of the wonderful Grade 6’s we had at our campuses this year.

Worm Wee For Sale:

Our worm wee has been a wonderful success with us raising over $90 so far.  With only a few bottles left, we look forward to using the money to buy some worms for our worm farms and a few bits and bobs needed for our garden/sustainability projects.  If you would like to get your hands on a bottle or two, it will be on sale out the back of the school (Yuille St) for $3 per bottle (honesty box setup).  A reminder that this needs to be diluted before pouring on your plants.  Approximately one part (worm wee) to 10 (water).
