"We are in good hands"

On Tuesday we experienced our second last whole Campus event for 2020 - our Investiture Ceremony.  Investiture is the formal act or occasion where an honour is placed on someone. In this case on Tuesday, the students and staff were able to watch the formal call to leadership and badge ceremony for the Student Executive and House Captains for 2021, via a live YouTube feed.

In a symbolic act of recognition, our Masters of Ceremony on this occasion were two of our junior student leaders (SRC representatives), Tamika Carey (Year 7) and Kaylah Barrett (Year 8) who were able to set the right atmosphere of this special ceremony with a lovely acknowledgement of country and opening Call to Leadership prayer that reminded us of Jesus' model of servant leadership. After being called to lead, each captain received their badge from Mr Black before making a pledge to the community to uphold the values and principles of a leader at St. Peter's college. At the conclusion of the badges being presented, our new college captains Milly and Callum made a short but powerful opening address that referenced their admiration for the student leaders of 2020 and especially outgoing College Captain's Brendon and Talia and their hopes as Captains, to be able to work with all students in 2021 to make it a year of celebration together - of our best sports carnivals, our best lunchtime activities and our best year of connecting to one another.

For the adults witnessing the Investiture ceremony for 2021, one couldn't help but think that with Year 7 and 8 leaders like Tamika and Kaylah and senior College Captains in Milly and Callum, we certainly are in good hands.

"We got this! "

Wednesday saw a transition of another kind as every year group moved up into their classes for the next calendar year. While there are many benefits to making a 'head start' on the school year, a change like this can cause a sense of healthy anxiety as we transition with new teachers, new subjects and new classmates. It is important to acknowledge those feelings of worry as a very natural reaction to change. Some of us manage the change easily and with a sense of adventure while for others, the adjustment is much more challenging. What is important to remember is that whatever the size of the change or challenge, we can get through it together ~ this is what COVID has taught us. We are agile. We can adapt to any conditions. We have the resilience to overcome obstacles such as unhelpful thoughts that try to get in the way of us being our best selves and our best community at St. Peter's College.

So as we begin the new academic year with Headstart I encourage everyone to call upon what has been learnt and is being learnt about the way we have coped with the obstacles of 2020. This experience is a source of strength that no matter what, " We got this!"
