Year 10 Literature

if i let you into my mind

do you promise to keep yours open?

 Year 10

Open minds and open hearts have been forefront for our Year 10 Literature students as they embraced the opportunity to ‘write their own secrets’ as they developed a series of poems inspired by the contemporary medium of Insta-Poetry. Succinct, stylised and non-standard in form, the poetry of social media offers students the opportunity to explore the teenage experience in contemporary society, and to investigate the scope and dexterity of the English language. It was a pleasure to watch the girls discover their unique voices and experience the catharsis of processing their emotions and experiences through the written word.

Unit 1 Literature

We are all in the gutters but some of us are looking at the stars

                                                                  Oscar Wilde

Not to be outdone by the Year 10 students, our Unit 1 Literature students have been expressing their creative instincts in a more visual form. Emerging themselves in the world of high Victorian society, they have been acquainting themselves with the withering wit of Oscar Wilde as he takes aim at the farcical social sensibilities of the era, not least regarding marriage customs and class expectations.

DAV Debating

In further displays of powerful Kilbreda voices at work, our Debating teams have begun the competitive year very strongly.

Our B Grade Team 1 (Year 11) prepared a fantastic debate and lost by a narrow margin whilst our B Grade Team 2 (Year 11) won their debate and Angelique Vargheese was awarded best speaker. This was Angelique’s second ever debate!

Meanwhile our D Grade Team (Year 9) won their second debate of the year and Taylah Bell was awarded best speaker! Congratulations to all the girls on their fantastic achievements. It is wonderful to see our students proudly representing the College and honing their ability to research, construct and deliver incisive arguments.

Year 12 - 'Hour of Power'

As the academic year moves into its gears, we commenced our Year 12 ‘Hour of Power’ program. Each week, Unit 3 and 4 English students are invited to participate in after hours lectures and practice exams as they build strategically towards the final VCE examinations.

It was hugely encouraging to see Room 23 bursting at the seams this week as students squeezed in to join the first session. The high levels of motivation and personal responsibility were very gratifying to see and bode well for a year level determined to make the most of their final school year and to fulfil their undoubted potential.
