OSHC

Wominjeka Everyone,

A number of educators observed that students appeared to be more emotionally mature this year.

This was on the back of the first full term for students in 2 years after the several lockdowns

I don’t know if this was because our OSHC is better organised, better trained and better resourced than it’s ever been. This was certainly part of the picture, especially given our focus on mental well-being, however it wasn’t the whole picture!

I went through our observations and reflections and discovered many examples of cooperation, kindness and emotional self-regulation among our students. Students do have the usual anxieties and concerns, but they seem to be better equipped at managing them. Us as educators have improved our capacity to support emotional development in students, but a great deal is forthcoming, and self-led by the students themselves.

What became clear from the evidence, was how much emotional “heavy lifting” has been happening at home by parents and carers. Students tell us lots of fabulous stories about their family life. They love the quiet strolls in the park, helping out their younger brother or coping with the bistro running out of nuggets. We are seeing the efforts made by families to support emotional development and it’s awesome.

Maybe lockdowns forced us to slow down. Maybe we are simply learning to be kinder to ourselves. Whatever the reasons, we’re all taking more time to talk things through, and we’ve become better at observing and looking out for each other. Keep up the great work!”

An independent study supported our findings across the state, and you can read this in the link below.
