Level 1/2
Level 1
Welcome back! We hope that everyone enjoyed the school holidays. Term 2 will be busy but we are looking forward to continuing the learning journey with all the amazing Year 1 children.
During the last week of Term 1, we had fun with rhyming words, identifying them in well-known nursery rhymes. We began exploring the elements of narrative writing and the children used picture cards to build a story. The children experimented with ‘sizzling starts’ and the various ways to engage the readers of their story. During Maths, we discussed the vocabulary used to describe directions and position. The children used Beebots, programming them to follow certain directions on a map. And finally, we all enjoyed some Easter craft, creating Easter baskets, crowns and sunglasses! It was a colourful end to the term.
During our Reading Workshops last week, we discussed the behaviours that support reading, including the importance of choosing ‘Just Right’ books. The children have also been working hard on building their reading stamina.
We are continuing our focus on narrative writing, with the children developing ideas about characters, setting, beginning, middle and end. There was also plenty of discussion and brainstorming around ‘problems’ and ‘solutions’, to help inspire their writing.
For Maths, we explored the concept of collecting information, and how we can show (or represent) that information. As a class, we posed a question, collected the answers and then showed our findings by creating a picture graph. We also used other manipulatives such as unifix blocks to represent data.
Reflecting on Anzac Day, the Year 1 children listened to the story of Anzac Ted and shared their own knowledge and understanding of this day of national remembrance.

Level 2
The level 2 students have made a fantastic start to Term 2. The classrooms have been full of lots of amazing stories of what they did during the holidays. The students have been writing recounts, persuasive pieces about why they would be a good assistant to the Easter Bunny and consolidating their knowledge of place value. We have also started collecting building material for our ‘Build It’ challenge later this term.
This week we have also focused on learning about Anzac Day and why it is an important day to celebrate. Students read the story ‘Anzac Ted’ and learned about Simpson and his Donkey.
We are all looking forward to a very busy Term 2 with our Swimming program starting in Week 4, Basketball clinic, Cyber Safety incursion and our ‘Build It’ challenge.
