CLAY TARGET SHOOTING CLUB

Term 1 News

A lot has happened so far to date. We have several new and eager young students who have shown great interest and ability in this sporting activity.

To enable them to compete in interschool competitions, it is a requirement for students to have passed the Victorian Gun Safety course and subsequently obtain a Junior Firearms Licence.

Mr Darren White, a Melbourne Clay Target Member and owner of the Yarra Valley Hunting store in Lilydale, organised a night for parents and students to complete the course.

The picture below shows some of the students and parents that attended the evening.

Again for 2022, we are running a small informal handicap event every month, for students who regularly attend on Wednesday afternoons.

The latest event was a very close competition, with Kieren Taylor (Year 9) being the eventual winner on the night, with Riley Huges-Gage (Year 8) second and both Cooper Smith (Year 9) and James Granger (Year 8), equal third.

Congratulations to Kieren on his WIN!

On Tuesday 15 March, 8 of our students competed at an interschool event at Bairnsdale. Some travelled during the Labour Day long weekend and others, elected to leave school at 5.30 am with Mr Box for the approximately, 3 hour drive.

Our students did extremely well against some very good competitors. There were over 120 students at the event from 10 local schools. We are quite lucky, as we get a special invitation to this Gippsland event.

For most, it was their first actual competitive event. Riley Huges-Gage (Year 8), came second in the Junior Division. It is noteworthy to see, that his score was only a couple of targets less than the actual winner of the Senior Division. Well done Riley!

A picture of Riley with his trophy is shown below.

Jai Wraith and Dylan Naylor have now started competing at club events on Saturdays and have acquitted themselves well in these open events. Last weekend at their second event, they respectively were placed first and second.

Ben De Pedro (Year 10), has been progressing in leaps and bounds and has won numerous events in the adult “A” grade events around the state in which he has competed.

Ben is also travelling to Sydney to compete in an event to determine who will be selected to represent Australia at an international event to be held in Italy, later this year. We wish him all the best at this competition.

We are really looking forward to our local interschool competition to be held on, Thursday 5 May.  All of our students have a very good chance of “bagging” some trophies at this event, and we will report on the competition in the next newsletter.
