Wellbeing

Social skills are the skills we use every day to interact and communicate with others. They include verbal and non-verbal communication, such as speech, gesture, facial expression and body language.

Throughout Term 3 the students will be participating in the STOP THINK DO program for their social and emotional learning.

The aim and value of a social skills program like STOP THINK DO is to help children improve their peer relationships and develop emotional intelligence.

The critical skills they will be learning through this program are:

Social Perceptual Skills: Picking up visual, auditory and spatial cues that will help them clarify problems and feelings.

Self-Control: Holding back and controlling immediate emotions, so feelings can be communicated appropriately.

Cognitive Skills: Thinking about options in social situations and evaluating their possible consequences.

Behavioural Skills: Acting appropriately, with both verbal and non-verbal behaviours.

Pro-social Motivation: Fostering attitudes and goals that are pro-social, so children want to use their skills.

Support of Significant People: Involving teachers, peers and parents in order to extend the children’s new skills and attitudes from the classroom to real life.

I look forward to sharing more about this program next term by including childrens' learning and comments as well as some family activities.
