Italian Poetry Competitions

CIS Junior Italian Poetry Competition & Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition

This week the students studying Italian in Years 7 to 11 had a wonderful opportunity to participate in their respective Poetry Competitions. The students in Years 7 & 8 participated in the CIS Junior Italian Poetry Competition and the students in Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in the Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition.  These are annual competitions and this year we were very fortunate to be able to run them both at school and face to face as the judges from both competitions visited us here at Killester on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In both competitions the students were required to select an Italian poem, for their year level, from a given list of a variety of Italian poets and memorise it and deliver it with good voice, intonation and relevant expression. Throughout term 2, in most lessons and for homework, the girls practiced independently and in groups to perfect their memorisation and delivery with meaning. It was great to see all the girls nervously excited whilst waiting for their turn to recite their poem to the judges.

In addition, It was great to meet and catch up with the judges from both competitions, but in particular, the judges from the Dante competition, because they were also Killester’s current Languages teachers past university professors from when they were studying at university in the years gone by. It was great to see the judges still showing great enthusiasm  and connection with the Italian language.

The Languages department wishes the girls all the very best in both these competitions as we await the results early next term.

Good luck and in bocca al lupo!
