Campion LifeLink Fundraisers

It has been a busy couple of weeks for Campion students as they worked hard to fundraise for LifeLink! The money raised will be greatly appreciated by the Church organisation as it goes towards running professional services and caring support for people in need across Western Australia.

On Thursday 24 June, students took part in the event, ‘Around the World’. Campion students were encouraged to run or walk as many laps of the 400m track as possible in 30 minutes, while completing the challenges on route. There were six challenges, representing different countries, which students could raise extra money for by competing in. They were sponsored by family and friends for every lap then ran or challenge they completed.

The fun did not stop there! On Thursday 1 July, Year 7 Campion students also ran a bake sale for LifeLink. The student’s created so many delicious baked goods and treats that the sale was able to run at both recess and lunch! It proved to be a huge success raising an impressive $462.20.

Thank you so much to all Campion families for your generous efforts. We have raised a total of $4,051, the most that Campion House has ever raised for LifeLink! We are very grateful for your ongoing support and kindness.

Year 7 Parent Resource: Recent Year 7 Retreat

The Year 7 students were challenged to bring forth an open-mindset and heart to the recent Year 7 Retreat which occurred at the 24:7 School Ministry Headquarters in Osborne Park. The Youth Team leaders could not have been more complimentary in the way that our students enthusiastically engaged in the ‘energetic’ activities as well as reverently reflected in the prayer liturgy.

The theme, Community of Christ related to the CEWA RE Curriculum and our Ignatian values of 'finding God in all things'.

We invite parents to view the parent resource below which is designed to engage in the topics learnt in class and on the retreat at home. Please feel free to give feedback which will anonymously go to the Youth Ministry Team. Please see letter below from 24:7 School Ministry.

Dear parents,

John XXIII College was proud to partner with 24:7 School Ministry who facilitated the Year 7 Retreat. The team at 24:7 School Ministry have just launched their Parent Resource which they hope will assist you to not only be informed about the material that was presented but also to provide you with some tools in reinforcing the key concepts presented.

You can gain access to the free Parent Resource here PARENT PORTAL | 247youthministry where you will be directed to the Community of Faith resource. We hope you find this useful, and we look forward to the feedback received on the effectiveness of the material provided for you.”

Once again, we want to thank you for your continued support, and we will continue to advise you of the progress we make in providing further material for both staff and students to enhance the learning and spiritual aims of the retreat experiences. Of course, we also would love your feedback on the Parent Resource as this will assist us in our goal of making the retreat experience a springboard for continual spiritual development.

God bless,

Mario.

Politics and Law Guest Speaker

On Monday, the Year 12 Politics and Law ATAR students welcomed Federal Member for Curtin, Ms Celia Hammond, to the College. Ms Hammond had been invited as part of the Year 12 incursion and provided an invaluable opportunity for our ATAR students to enhance their understanding of critical aspects of the curriculum. Ms Hammond shared her expertise and spoke about her role within Federal Parliament, and on a number of contemporary issues including accountability of parliamentarians. Students were afforded an opportunity to ask a range of questions in an informal setting which provided a wonderful atmosphere for academic discussion to flourish. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Hammond for enriching student’s understanding and passion for politics.

Embracing cultural diversity

Learning a language through cooking is a recipe for success. All students at John XXIII College have the opportunity to study a language. Our well-established Language Program offers interactive, creative courses in French, Italian and Japanese. Cooking is a universal task of humanity and is intimately linked with culture and language and provides an opportunity for task-based learning.

Humanities & Social Sciences

With the term break now upon us, we reflect on a busy term for the Humanities and Social Sciences department. Each term, we take time to celebrate the individual disciplines both inside and outside the classroom.

  • History:
    • Students in Years 8 and 9 took part in the Australian History Competition. This nationwide competition is Australia’s largest history competition – and is a great opportunity for students to develop crucial skills such as source interpretation and analysis.
  • Geography:
    • Year 11 Geography ATAR students travelled to Rottnest to explore the island as a microcosm for sustainable practices. Whilst the Year 12 Geography ATAR students travelled to the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary in Bayswater to conduct an inquiry into the Swan Canning River System. The students completed fieldwork into biodiversity loss and the impacts of land cover change.
  • Economics:
    • 90 students from Years 7 to 12 participated in the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Schools Sharemarket Game. A fantastic way to expose students to all the trials and tribulations of the market, fluctuations in share prices, market volatility as well as educating them in how to read financial news, share prices and what to look for in a company when investing.
  • Politics and Law:
    • Whilst students in Year 9 ran their own political campaign as part of their skills and inquiry assessment – our senior school students took part in the Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition – learning valuable skills in legal research and in the development and presentation of a persuasive argument.

A big thank you to the committed and passionate Humanities’ staff…here’s to a successful and exciting Term 3.

SPORT

Similar to last term, all Senior NAS teams competed in a Winter One-Day Carnival on Wednesday 23 June. Congratulations to all students for representing our College throughout the NAS Program. I would like to take the time to thank all our NAS coaches for offering up their time to supervise and coach all our teams this term.

  • ACC Cross Country Carnival – Champion School
  • ACC Division 1 Girls Hockey Carnival – 5th
  • ACC Division 1 Boys Hockey – 4th

Our focus has now turned to athletics where training commenced in Week 8 of this term. Congratulations to all students who have shown dedication to the early morning training sessions over the last three weeks. The numbers and enthusiasm shown at each session from all students has been impressive. Last year John XXIII College achieved our term goal of staying in the ACC A Division Athletics. The aim this year is to be as competitive as we can against the other A Division Schools. All students are encouraged to attend training sessions next term to help achieve this goal!

The Sports team at John XXIII College are honoured and proud to be leading such dedicated and talented sporting students. We hope everyone enjoys their holiday and look forward to seeing you all next term.

Congratulations
