John XXIII Rowing Club

IGSSA Head of the River

Last Saturday, 26 June, our Years 9-12 girls competed in the IGSSA WA Head of the River and what an amazing day it was!  Our girls rowed well achieving their highest overall points score for the season and our Freshman girls (Years 9/10) were a great example of this, achieving their fastest times in IGSSA regattas.

Some notable results from the day were:

  • Holly Cannon won the A Division Single Scull with Jemima Broderick taking 2nd place.
  • Lara Sivwright won the B Division Single Scull with Kady Wall taking 2nd place.

As well as these great results, for the first time in over seven years John XXIII had a senior VIII racing in the 2nd VIII event.  After coming 3rd in the previous regatta, our senior girls improved considerably to take second place, holding off a late push from Perth College and Methodist Ladies’ College.

It is also noteworthy that our 2nd VIII was 0.03 seconds off the 3rd placed crew in the 1st VIII race!

A huge congratulations to all the girls for their great results last Saturday, and the commitment that was required throughout the last two terms to achieve it.

A big thank you to all the coaches for their commitment to teaching and mentoring our rowers, and the parents for setting up regattas and getting our rowers to training.  The John XIII Rowing Club is such a strong community, and that culture has been the key to the great results we achieved this season.

WA Pathway VIII

Congratulations to Holly Cannon for her selection in the 2021 WA Pathway VIII!

The Pathway VIII program is a Rowing Australia initiative for the best school boy & school girl rowers in each state to compete against each other and possibly be selected as the Junior National crew to compete at the World Junior Rowing Championships.  The aim of the program is to expose school rowers to the next level of rowing, working with high-level coaches and staff, experiencing the national rowing selection process and competing against their school counterparts from around the country and encouraging them to make the next step in their rowing pathway.

Athletes will also be given the chance to meet and work with members of the Australian Rowing Team including athletes, physiotherapists, team doctors & coaches.

Unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 situation around the country, the Pathway VIII will not be travelling to South Australia to complete.  However, those selected will have a training camp over the school holidays and is a great opportunity to experience the next level of rowing. Well done, Holly!

House Regatta & Presentation Night

In light of the current lockdown and restrictions to group gatherings, the House Regatta and Rowing Presentation Night will be postponed until a later date in Term 3, to be confirmed.

Rowing with John XXIII

John XXIII College is committed to providing all students with an opportunity to learn, develop and excel in rowing. Students from Years 8 -12 actively train and represent the College in regattas, while those in Year 7 are offered an opportunity to get exposure to the sport via our ‘Learn to Row’ program. Being involved in rowing, students can join a truly unique sport and be part of a strong and welcoming community at the John XXIII Rowing Club.
