Visual Arts

Wow! It’s hard to believe we are already nearing the end of term one!  We have certainly been very busy in Visual Arts this term-developing routines, learning how to work respectfully in our art room space and of course, being super creative!

Thank you to everyone who has been able to bring their own smock to school.  It has been so pleasing to see students being organised with their smock on, ready for their art lesson. It can get very messy in the art room and we don’t want anyone to end up with their school uniform covered in food dye or paint!  As the Year 5/6 students found out this week, making papier-mâché sculptures is a very messy process, so smocks are essential.

It would be wonderful if all students could begin term 2 with their own smock!

Our wonderful Foundation students have been exploring the art elements of line and colour.  They have practised drawing lines using a range of mediums, with oil pastels being a particular favourite.  They have been encouraged to use rich and descriptive vocabulary to describe the lines they have created.  Food dye has been used to make crayon resists and has provided the perfect opportunity to discuss the primary colours and experience some colour mixing.

Our super enthusiastic Year 1/2 students have explored the art elements of shape and colour when creating paper collages.  They have cut both geometric and abstract shapes from a range of papers, using these to make layered and overlapping designs in their collages.  Tearing paper into shapes such as circles, squares and triangles proved to be challenging!  Oil pastels have been used to explore mark making, with students being encouraged to describe the marks using rich and descriptive vocabulary.  Food dye has provided the perfect opportunity to experience colour mixing to make the secondary colours.

Our eager Year 3-6 students have explored the art elements of shape and colour and have been introduced to the colour wheel when learning about complementary colours.  Creating paper collages has given them the opportunity to be introduced to the art principles of balance and unity.  Using their iPads, they have developed their photography skills when taking photos of their work, zooming in to make new artworks and editing their photos to create impressive digital masterpieces.
