Mazenod’s World’s Greatest Shave

On Friday 12 March, Mazenod College hosted the World’s Greatest Shave. For students at Mazenod this year’s event held even greater significance as Kieran Rahilly of Year 12 is undergoing treatment for Leukemia. Kieran was diagnosed in 2020 with cancer and has undergone many treatments and bouts of chemotherapy whilst bravely fighting the disease. The two students who volunteered to give up their curly locks were William Daniels of Year 11 and Ken Chau of Year 12. Both know Kieran personally and both are a member of the Mazenod Film Club, a student interest group initiated by Kieran and Mr Shaun Akkermans.

William’s mother, Nella, a hairdresser by profession, supervised the event and tidied up the novel styles created by her ‘new apprentice’, Kieran. The money that the students donated will be given to cancer research and, if you would like to support this very worthy cause, the College is more than happy to accept donations that will be forwarded to the Leukemia Foundation.

VCAL Senior Profile:

Xavier Palamara

In 2020 Xavier Palamara began an SBAT (School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship) with the National Food Institute. His training has continued throughout 2021 and this will allow Xavier to complete a Certificate II in Warehousing Operations. Xavier is based at the Dandenong South depot, Gre8 Pty Ltd, which partners with Foodbank, Australia’s largest food relief organization and the work that Xavier is engaged in provides rescued food that supports front line charities feed vulnerable Australians. Two major providers to Gre8 are Coles and Woolworths who supply over a million dollars each in foodstuff and groceries a year.

While completing his Certificate II in Warehousing Operations, Xavier has had the opportunity to learn the procedures and processes that are involved with the logistics of running a warehouse. Foodstuffs are sorted, packed and stored in such a way that it can reach those in need as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

If he wishes, Xavier, when he turns 18, can participate in a forklift driver’s course and can gain accreditation to use scissor lifts. Though Xavier is thoroughly enjoying his time completing his SBAT, he may pursue a career in horticulture or landscaping when he finishes Year 12.

Mazenod College is grateful to the staff of the National Food Institute for the way that they have looked after Xavier, and we particularly thank Barbara Reid and all the mentors at Gre8 for the advice, life skills and education that they have provided him over the past year and a half.
