Vermont Secondary College

The Annual Vermont Secondary College House Athletics Carnival is only a hop, skip and a jump away and will be held on Friday 5th March at the Bill Sewart Athletics track in East Burwood (at the rear of Nunawading basketball stadium on Burwood Highway).

All parents and guardians are invited to attend on the day to support their children and must sign in with VSC staff on the gate at arrival.  This is a whole school event and no classes will run on the day.

All Year 7 to 12 students are required to attend the Athletics and actively participate. Students should dress up in their house colours.   All students must have paid and given consent on Compass to attend the event. If for any reason your child will not be attending on the day, please enter the absence on Compass as Parent Choice before 8.45am. If you are experiencing any problems with Compass please leave a message on the Absence line.

The House Athletics event is always a great day. The more participants and involvement from the students the bigger and better the 2021 carnival will be. It would be great to see all students participate in at least two events! Please note that students will compete in age groups – NOT year level groups. The age groups are taken by the age of the student as of December 31 2021. For example if they are turning 15 this year they will be in the 15 year old age group.  The college canteen will be operating at the track (CASH ONLY) but all students are advised to bring a snack and a drink bottle. They may also choose to bring lunch but strictly no ordering delivered food from external providers. Also keep an eye on the weather and dress appropriately. Please ensure that ‘slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ is the order of the day and this must include a hat and water bottle. Additional sunscreen will, as always, be available at the sports. Students are also reminded that under OHS guidelines, thongs as footwear are not permissible and runners would be the appropriate footwear for the day.  Please ensure your child is reminded to bring a mask as Masks MUST be worn on the bus to and from the track. All students will be taken by bus to the track at 8:45am.  Students will be dismissed on arrival back at VSC between 2:30pm-3:10pm.

Students are NOT PERMITTED to sign out of the athletics carnival early.  Students are required to attend the entire day and support their house.

Students are NOT PERMITTED to travel by car to the event and must travel to and from the athletics track in the school buses.

If you have any questions about the day then please contact the Head of Sport, either Amy Malander or Shaun Gillespie.

Scores: defeated by Mt Waverley SC 7-21. Defeated by Highvale SC 10-21. Defeated by Glen Waverley SC 11-23

Player of the Day: Ethan L. winning both of his singles matches

Thanks to Ms. Gerbing for her time and energy needed to coach a side. The students are truly grateful.

Girls softball

Some great hitting and base running resulted in a win against Mt Waverley but we were not consistent enough to defeat Glen Waverley SC in our district round robin. Thank you to Maddi W for her great leadership of this team over six years at the college and to the other girls who have represented Vermont SC in Softball on many occasions; Dayna T, Emme D, Catherine V, Adrienne Lim and Tessa B. It was also great to have some new players join our team for the first time in Senior School; Caitlin C, Penny M, Chloe C, Margeurite S. Well done!

Boys Baseball

In the past the senior boys Baseball team have had success on the diamond, and such was the case this time around. Team work, communication and all-round skill got them to the next round. Batter up.... we are ready to take on our next opponents soon. Special mentions go to our capable Captain Cam Whitington and his powerful pitching, Josh Spencer for several awesome hits and homers, Riley Askew also took a handy catch in the outfield.

Mrs Callegaro thanks all boys for their impressive sportsmanship and manners on the day.

Also the team would like to Thank Ms. Callegaro for her time, energy and leadership on the day, it will hold them in good stead for the next round. Thanks coach.

INTERMEDIATE SPORT

On Tuesday both the intermediate Girls and Boys had to opportunity to compete at the newly built Mullum-Mullum stadium for the Volleyball Round Robin.

Girls report: All games were fairly close and team spirits were high throughout the day.

The both A and B Teams won 2 out of their 3 matches but unfortunately for the B team they just missed finals on count back of points.

However, The Vermont A team went through to the finals and beat Highvale in a very convincing win seeing them make it through to the next round robin set to be played out in April.

Congratulations to all the girls in both teams as they showed a very positive spirit and represented the college in such a well-mannered and positive light. Cant wait for round 2!

Thanks to Mr. Mizzi for his time, energy and expert advice on the day, it will definitely hold them in good stead for the next round. Thanks coach.

Boys report: Both the A teams and the B team played really well throughout the day. The played as a team, followed instructions and stuck to the game plan. Over the 3 matches the B team grow with confidence and learnt the finer art of volleyball, but unfortunately didn’t make the finals.

The A team won 2 out the 3 games and met Highvale in the finals. It was a thriller with both schools winning a game each with only a few points the difference. The third game was to 10 points and it was an epic display of structure, sportsmanship and skill. Unfortunately Highvale held their nerve and served out the match. Good luck Highvale in the next round.

Thanks to Mr.Gillespie for coaching the boys on the day, much appreciated.

Boys Cricket

The Intermediate boys cricketers are to be commended on their uplifting of the Vermont Values and displaying excellent sportsmanship whilst on tour in Mulgrave. They were an awesome team of students to coach. Our team won and proceeded to the through to the next round easily.

Highlights included

Jumping Jack W was an all-rounder star.

Kaelan S otherwise known as safe hands played some fine shots and fielded up to his name.

Harun Aravindan frightened GWSC batters into submission with his hurricane like bowling.

Lachie W smashed some ferocious boundaries and then when fielding on the boundary put new meaning into putting your body  on the line for the team.

His bro James WG Whitchurch played some commanding cricket.

Zach T tweaked some magic on the bowling scene.

Daniel T sacrificed his own game to go over and help the opposition scorers, well, score. He epitomised our value of integrity- a credit to himself, the College and the Community

Hardman brilliant keeping all day.

The students would like to personally thank Mr. Henderson for coaching the side, being their mentor and for his inspirational pre game speeches. Great work coach.

Girls Cricket

The Intermediate girls cricket team played well today winning their first game against Highvale in a canter. Stella D.R made a great 50 and was supported well by Sunday D as Vermont made 170 runs. The bowlers kept the opposition to just 70 runs. A convincing win.

The final was against Mt Waverley who batted well to make 141 runs. Vermont made a good start with Harini P making a solid 26 runs. We fell well short in the run chase making 55. The girls enjoyed the day and represented the school in a very positive way. We had a very young and reasonably inexperienced team but all the girls can be proud of their performance today. It was a pleasure coaching the team.

The students would like to thank Mr. Squire for his expertise advice and enthusiasm throughout training and on the day. He wisdom and knowledge of all sports is an asset to the College
