Year 5/6 News

What's been happening in 5/6!

In Literacy, we have explored different type of fiction texts, identifying realistic, historical, fairytale and fantasy fiction. Students explored characters and their development and eagerly developed engaging character descriptions.

Our explicit grammar focus has been on using commas correctly and accurately using punctuation in direct speech. During our Guided Reading focus groups, we have focused on teaching at the point of needs of students. You can continue to support your child at home by continuing to encourage them to read aloud - focusing on their fluency, expression, pace, and comprehension (understanding of the text).

Our Maths focus over the past fortnight has been on exploring efficient mental and written strategies for Addition and Subtraction, while revising our knowledge of place value.

To continue to support your child at home, we suggest encouraging your child to show multiple ways to solve problems (not just vertical addition and subtraction!). You can also support your child by exploring integers in real life (positive or negative whole numbers - like on a thermometer!).

During Religion and Wellbeing, we have been focusing on Lent as a time for preparation. Students have explored and practiced demonstrating empathy towards others through their words and action. They have reflected on Scripture and identified ways in which we can apply them to our personal and communal lives. Our Year 6 students have been reflecting on the work of the Holy Spirit in the world as they continue to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Last Friday, the Year 3-6 students eagerly participated in the athletics trials. Congratulations to all students for their enthusiasm and positive attitude. We also thank the parent volunteers who supported on the day!
