Year 3/4 News

What's Happening in Year 3/4!

Our last newsletter saw us in Victoria's 'circuit breaker' lockdown and we found ourselves back doing home online learning. We were very proud of how the 3/4 students coped with 'zooming in' to us and completing their tasks during the day. We would also like to thank all the parents for their support during this time.

The students are well and truly getting used to the routines and programs of Year 3/4. We hope you enjoy reading about what has been happening over the last 2 weeks.

Literacy

In Writing, students have been learning how to structure a narrative. They have followed the writing process by unpacking a 'seed', planning and drafting their narrative then editing their work.

Our explicit grammar focus has been on contractions. A contraction is two words that have been combined. One or more letters is dropped and replaced with an apostrophe. eg. I am = I'm

During Reading, we have been focussing on the author's purpose; the 'why' behind a piece of writing. Students have discovered that there are three reasons for writing: to persuade, to inform and to entertain.

Numeracy

In Maths, students have completed their first unit of work, Place Value. Students will now be moving onto Addition and Subtraction. Students will investigate the connection between addition and subtraction, recall number facts to develop efficient mental strategies for computation and apply place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to solve problems.

Athletics

We had a fantastic athletics day for years 3 - 6, congratulations to everyone who participated and those that showed great sportsmanship. A special thanks to all the parents who helped out, you were all absolute lifesavers! It wouldn't have been the same day without you. The students were all very excited about the day and we can't wait for next year.

Nature Mandalas

One of the activities we asked the students to do was to get outside with nature and create a mandala with what they found. The students learned that mandalas are usually circular in formation and the word is Sanskrit for 'circle'. Some mandalas are symmetrical so we asked the students to create a mandala that was symmetrical. We created a video of some of the amazing mandalas that were created during home online learning.
