Year 1/2 News

Religion

In Religion, we have been exploring bible stories and the important message it has for us as Catholics. We have been reading parables about being a good friend such as The Good Samaritan and Jesus and Zacchaeus and making connections to the message in these parables and the qualities of being a good friend. Students have made some beautiful connections to friendship and respectful relationships through scripture and reflection. Over the next fortnight, we will be exploring Lent being a time for change through prayer, practice and almsgiving.

Add it Up!

Over the past fortnight, the 1/2 ‘s have been exploring many different ways to represent and solve simple addition problems. They have been practicing efficient mental, written and hands on strategies. Some strategies the students have delved into are the jump strategy, split strategy, mental algorithms and rearranging parts using concrete materials such as popsicle sticks, counters and MAB blocks. They have done an amazing job at consolidating their knowledge and working out the most effective strategy to use for each addition problem. Ask your child to show you some different ways they can add 2 or 3 digit numbers. Over the next fortnight, students will be looking at the connection between addition and subtraction as they represent and solve simple subtraction problems. Here are some pictures of 1/2 ‘s solving addition sums using a variety of strategies:

Read All About It!

The Year 1/2 students have been working in their new reading groups over the past fortnight. They have adjusted really well to the reading routine and we are very proud of their efforts. It has been really pleasing to see the positive interactions and discussions about various texts, between the students from different homerooms and their reading teachers.

The students have Guided Reading sessions twice a week with their reading teacher where specific skills and goals are focused on. Students also work independently on tasks that allow them to practise various literacy skills.

Here are some examples of the independent tasks the students completed during reading lessons:
