Foundation News

A Snapshot of What's Happening in Foundation...

Students in Foundation have now adjusted to school, they have learnt routines and are now fully aware of the expectations in our learning space. Most students are now remembering to change their home reading book each day, and it is pleasing to see Foundation students learning to become responsible for their own belongings. The children have learnt each other's names and they have been practising asking each other to play during recess. It has been lovely to see friendships blossom and grow. We look forward to seeing the children continue to get to know and support each other this year.

Religion

As part of learning in Religion, Foundation students listened and responded to the parable "The Good Shepherd". The children learnt that the shepherd knows and calls the sheep who belong to Him. Similarly, Jesus knows every one of us who have believed in Him and trusted in Him to take away our sins. He knows each one of His followers by name. We each have a personal relationship with Jesus, our shepherd.

Students were asked to retell the story of the Good Shepherd and here is what some of them said:

Theo- All the 99 sheep were in the gate, One got lost. The sheep got stuck. The shepherd found the sheep. He told everyone he found the sheep and he was happy.

Luca M- The sheep was in its fold. The shepherd counted the sheep and one was missing. He looked for the sheep. He found it and he was happy.

Monte- The sheep were together. One sheep ran away. He got lost and was sad. The shepherd found him and he was happy, so was the sheep.

Zoe- There was a sheep in a barn. One of the sheep got lost. Then the shepherd found the sheep. He told his family.

Lincoln R- The sheep was left all alone. The shepherd didn't notice. The shepherd found the sheep and was happy and went back to the field.

Jackson- The shepherd counted his sheep but lost 1. He went out to look for his sheep. He found the sheep and was excited to have everyone back together.

Emmanuel- There were 100 sheep but 1 got lost. The shepherd looked for it. When he found the sheep, he told everyone about it because he was so excited to have all his sheep back together.

Writing

It has been wonderful to see students in Foundation starting to apply skills they are learning during explicit writing and spelling lessons, and work hard to try achieve their personal learning goals. Using a correct pincer grip, drawing detailed pictures, stretching sounds, identifying letters on a letter strip, recalling common and focus words, writing their name in lowercase letters and writing labels/sentences from left to right are some of the skills students have started to master.

Here is a sample of some of the children's writing:
