Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 1/Week 3-4

2021

Writing

Students have been setting up their Writer's Notebooks. They have developed an understanding of the purpose and sections within a Writer's Notebook. Students have enjoyed personalising their books and completed a Heart Mapping activity to share everything that is close to their hearts. Students were then asked to do a brainstorm describing Peace and Conflict to support the UOI. This week students have been practising their speech writing skills to resolve a conflict. They will present these to the grade.

Reading

Student's have been setting up their Reader's Notebooks. We have discussed the purpose and decided on the sections we will include. Students designed a front cover, they included the following questions; What do I like to read? Where do I like to read? When do I like to read? Students have begun doing reading responses in their Reader's Notebook during independent reading time. This included; character descriptions, comparing settings in their books, finding solutions to problems within their texts and summarising chapters. This week at home, students have been reading/listening to different texts that relate to our inquiry into Peace and Conflict.

Maths

This week during Home Learning, students have begun their inquiry into place value and working with large numbers. For example, they have practised ordering, writing these numbers in words and applying their knowledge to real life scenarios. Next week we will continue working on these skills and unpacking these concepts further.

Inquiry

This week in Inquiry, students looked at conflicts that occur in our local community. Students created role plays and acted out various conflicts in the school yard and then worked together as a class to identify different ways to effectively resolve these problems. They asked 5 questions to better understand the cause and effects of these conflicts and then brainstormed different strategies that could be used to diffuse or resolve the problems. Over the next few weeks students will begin looking at national and global conflicts.
