On Tuesday 11 October, we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron is visiting St Raphael’s School to run workshops with our students. Foundation-Year 2 students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. Year 3-6 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, and applying their own creative components. Cameron will also be engaging Year 5/6 students in a workshop exploring exciting and descriptive writing. Students and teachers are looking forward to a great day! In conjunction with the Author Visit, St Raphael’s School families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned the following day, Wednesday 12 October, to the Office.
POEM FOREST is a free nature writing prize that breathes life back into the natural world that sustains us.
Created by Red Room Poetry, in partnership with The Australian Botanic Garden, POEM FOREST invites students and teachers to use their words to make positive climate action. For every nature poem received a tree is planted to help heal habitats and create a POEM FOREST for future generations. In 2021, over 5,000 poem trees were planted.
All POEM FOREST Prize entries are published in their digital library and have the chance to win $5,000 in prizes, including $500 cash for each category, book packs from Magabala Books, Pantera Press, Wonderground as well as Garden tours, plants, seeds and more.

Despite advances in technology, the written word will never become obsolete because it has many advantages besides the fact that it is technologically simple. Of all the ways to convey ideas and communicate, the main two methods are the spoken word and the written word. This term, many year levels have been practising their letter writing by creating letters, cards and invitations. Perhaps over the holidays you might like to support your child with their writing by writing a letter and posting it to a loved one. Or perhaps giving your child the task of writing birthday cards for their friends.
Over the holidays it is always a great idea to keep daily reading in your routine. Reading regularly will support your child with the skills they have learnt across the term in both decoding and comprehension.
