Grade 5/6
Basketball Tournament
Last Wednesday, Mr Reid and Mr Wright took a group of 13 students to the Primary School Basketball Competition. There was a girls team of 7 and a boys team with 6. The morning started off well and we arrived at the Miner Dome with plenty of time to spare before our first game, it wasn't until we walked to the front door and a kind person informed us we were at the wrong venue. We raced back to try and catch the bus, it had already left. Mr Wright's quick thinking saved the day as he called Cam, the bus driver, to come pick us up and drop us at the correct stadium, still with plenty of time. The games were 2 x 8 minute halves. The games in the first part of the day was like watching headless chickens run around chasing a ball. Some students were learning the rules of basketball and others who had played, were adjusting to this very different style than they were used to from the weekend comps. By the last few games, both teams had improved and ended up coming away with a few wins each. Well done to those who played and testing out their skills. It was an enjoyable day had by all.
5/6 Writing Day
On Thursday the 1st of September (this Thursday), both grade 5/6 classes will be participating in a whole day of writing. This is similar to one that we held in Term 1, however, our genre this time will be a non-fiction information report. The topic will be on a person, place or animal of their choosing. Students have spent the past few weeks learning the structure of an information report, how to research and turning that research into paragraphs under specific sub topics. On Thursday, the 5/6 students will be allowed to dress up in clothes that relates to their topic. We look forward to reading the finished writing pieces.
Canberra Camp
Canberra Camp – Through the Eyes of the BPS School Captains (Baxter White and Kiarah Ford)
Monday 1st August 2022, the 5/6 cohort from Beaufort Primary School went to Canberra for our camp. We left around 6.30 and arrived at 5.00 pm with multiple stops on the way. We stayed at the Ibis Hotel in cabins with 3-5 people inside and ate dinner at 6.00 pm, then relaxed for the rest of the night.
Tuesday, we all woke up at 6.30 in the morning and got ready for the day, then at 7.00 am we all ate breakfast and after that we went and packed our bags for the long day ahead. We were on the bus by 7.30 and drove straight to the Australian Institute of Sport. As we went inside, we got a tour around the place and then went to do some activities related to sport. There was basketball, skiing, bob sledding and much, much more. After the AIS, we went to the high court. We went inside and had to go through security to proceed further into the building. Once inside, we spilt up into two groups and 1 group went to court 1 and the other group court 2. When we got inside, the court we had a really good explanation of what they did in there and what all of the pictures meant.
On Wednesday, we got ready and had breakfast like usual. Then we went to the Parliament House. Like yesterday, we had to go through security. Once inside the main building, we had a small tour of the place. Monique, our tour person, took us to a room set up like the House of Representatives so that we could role play. Once we finished our role play, we went to visit the real House of Representatives and got to listen to part of the argument. Afterwards, we went to the senate where a debate was going on. It was interesting listening to all the people speak. After the tour, we spoke to Dan Tehan and we got frozen yogurts.
Thursday, we did our usual routine in the morning then got on the bus. We arrived at the War Memorial early in the morning because we had the opportunity to do a wreath laying ceremony to start off our tour. We, the school captains, got to lay the wreath in the tomb of the unknown soldier. It was a very overwhelming emotional experience. After the wreath laying, we had gotten told about some short stories of soldiers who unfortunately passed away. After that very long day, we all went back to Ibis Hotel and packed our bags so that they were ready for the morning.
On the last day of camp, we all woke up really early in the morning and had breakfast. After breakfast we all did a quick room check and took our bags down to the bus so that they could be loaded on. We all said our sad goodbyes to Canberra then got on the bus. Overall, Canberra Camp was really fun. We are so grateful that we got to go. A big thanks to all the teachers who organised it.
We would like to thank the community groups who supported our camp – Beaufort and District Op Shop, APEX Beaufort, Rotary Beaufort, Bendigo Bank (Beaufort Branch), Skinny Sisters and BPS Parents & Friends.
We acknowledge the contributions provided by PACER, and their financial support in assisting our Year 5/6 students with the cost of this experience.
