From Our School Leaders

National Child Protection Week

We have completed many celebrations in the past few weeks and we are adding one more, week-long focus before the end of term. This week, we launched our first ever Child Protection Week celebration. This is a particularly relevant topic to focus on, as it allows time for the challenging and necessary conversations about child safety. We will be talking with children all week about their personal and online safety.

National Child Protection Week continues to embrace the overarching message that ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’.  In particular, this year we will be shining a light on children growing up safe and supported.

We would encourage families to talk to their children about child safety this week, and how your children can be safe and learn to look out for themselves. It’s a good time to go over the expectations of your child’s online behaviors and remind children about their safety.  They need to know exactly who they are interacting with online.

It’s also a good time to speak with your children about protecting themselves and what to do if they are feeling threatened or violated in any way, by anyone.

On Friday 8th September ALL students are invited to wear bright colourful clothing and accessories to promote the idea of 'A bright future for all students'.  Thank you to our Wellbeing Coordinator, Mrs Merran Maguire, and Ashlee Grouios for organising this week’s events.

Lost Property

We have an inordinate amount of lost property at the moment, and a lot of it is unnamed.

There are many jackets (some new), hats, books, toys and lunch containers galore! Please check if you are missing anything. All unclaimed lost property will go into second-hand uniform use after the term break.

You will find the Lost Property area outside the staff room in the main building.

Time To Find Your Hat And Sunscreen

As the weather starts to warm up, it is time to start wearing our hats once again, and remember to apply sunscreen at the beginning of the day for sun protection. As of next week, starting Monday 12th September, we expect all children and staff to be wearing their sun hats at school when outside.

The following information can be found in our Sunsmart Policy that was reviewed by the Education Sub Committee and School Council in 2019:

Sun protective uniform/clothing:

Sun protective clothing is included in our school uniform / dress code and sports uniform. School clothing is cool, loose fitting and made of densely woven fabric. It includes shirts with collars and longer sleeves, longer style dresses and shorts and rash vests or t-shirts for outdoor swimming.

From mid-August (exact date to be set by the school annually) to the end of April, all students must wear a sun protective hat (8cm wide) that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities. Hats may also be worn for all outdoor activities outside of the August to April time period, by parent or student choice. Students will be encouraged to wear hats on school camps and excursions where appropriate.

All children not wearing the appropriate hat or covering clothing are to play in a designated shaded area.

Sunscreen:

Scoresby Primary School encourages all staff and students to apply SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen daily whenever UV levels reach 3 and above. Students will be encouraged to apply their own sunscreen before going outdoors, and reapply every two hours if necessary.

Families are required to provide the sunscreen for their children. Pump pack SPF30 (or higher) broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen will be available at the first aid room for students to access if required.
