Highlights of Years 7 to 10 Outdoor Education

Outdoor education offers invaluable experiences and encourages students to connect with each other and nature in a positive way. Outdoor learning engages students in practical and active learning experiences in natural environments and settings. In these environments, students develop the skills and understanding to move safely and competently while valuing a positive relationship with natural environments and promoting the sustainable use of these environments. From Wednesday 24 August to Friday 26 August, students across Years 7 to 10 engaged in enriching and adventurous activities as part of their Outdoor Learning. Below are some highlights from each Year level.

Year 7

Year 7 attended the Kenilworth Homestead, operated by Higher Ground. Key aspects of the program were team building, problem-solving and overcoming challenges. Some highlights of the camp were jumping from the “Leap of Faith”, canoeing down the Mary River, and camping in very cold weather.

Year 8

The location for the Year 8 camp this year was the stunningly beautiful Moogerah Dam. Moogerah Lakeside Camp provided Year 8 with a home away from home, with welcoming and positive members of staff, wood-lined cabins and comforting homemade meals. Students engaged in a range of activities, including building catapults, stand-up paddle boarding, building chariots, canoeing, and hiking. Whilst the campout night for each group was astonishingly cold, students embraced the opportunity and, unsurprisingly, were big fans of the campfire…perhaps the marshmallows helped! Students showed resilience, care for others and positivity during our time at Moogerah Lakeside Camp, and we were incredibly proud of them all.

Year 9

Our Year 9 campers started bright and early on Wednesday 24 August, pulling through the charming country town of Imbil before arriving at their campsites at Borumba Dam and Stirling’s Crossing. Activities across the three days included canoeing on the gorgeous Borumba Dam, mountain biking and a rigorous hike through the beautiful surrounds. The cold nights could not dampen the spirits of our students, who worked cooperatively to prepare meals, set up tents and complete problem-solving challenges.

Year 10

Year 10 students ventured to Cooloola Recreation Area in the Great Sandy National Park for a 3-day canoe expedition. Two groups launched from Boreen Point and Elanda Point and canoed across Lake Cootharaba and into the Upper Noosa River, camping at Harry’s Hut and Elanda Point. Students engaged in practical and team-building activities along the way and were responsible for navigation, setting up camp, cooking, and leading the group. We were blessed with near-perfect paddling conditions, gorgeous weather and beautiful clear nights. Whilst the camp was challenging at times, each participant was able to successfully overcome their fear of capsizing to complete the expedition. At the end of the trip, groups reflected on the aspects of the camp that ‘rocked’ their world with comments like: ‘I loved lying on the jetty on Thursday night watching the amazing night sky and seeing 3 shooting stars!’ and ‘learning how to canoe was great’ along with ‘I loved spending time with my friends’ and ‘getting up for sunrise on the last day was very special’.
