Looking Back in Primary School

Year 6 Excursion to Moreton Bay

Following our Term 3 Unit of Inquiry 'Australian Immigration', Year 6 participated in a living history excursion run by the Moreton Bay Environmental Centre. The program traced the journeys of immigrants arriving in Australia, from the earliest settlements through to post-World War II. Underpinned by our classroom learning, we were able to gain deeper insight into why people chose to immigrate to Australia, where they came from and what they contributed to Australian society.

Our journey began on board the boat, Inspiration, as we crossed Moreton Bay in the footsteps of the first colonial immigrants. While on the boat, we experienced what life was like on the early immigrant ships and explored information from historical documents.

This boat journey eventually led to the Lytton Quarantine Station, which is located on the Brisbane River. This is the same site where many of Queensland's first immigrants were processed, thus giving authentic context to the stories. From this point on, we were immersed in drama and role-played as we 'lived' the experiences of those who found themselves at the Quarantine Station after their long sea journeys. The students were thoroughly engaged in the program and came away with a greater appreciation of Australia's immigration history.

Cultural Capers and House Picnic

Tuesday Flexi time was an exciting occasion for Year 6, who joined the Senior students on stage for their House Cultural Capers. Years 4 and 5 were invited to watch and joined in the fun ‘dance-off’ in the interval.

Congratulations to Ashburn 3 and Gibson 1, who took out the trophy in joint first place.

House picnics on Wednesday were another opportunity for the Junior and Senior schools to come together.
