Discovery Centre

Curriculum
Selamat siang families! We have had another fantastic week in the Discovery Centre! The highlight of course, being the grand opening of our brand new Junior Playground! The students have had ‘the best time ever’ playing on the new playground and have shown their gratitude and appreciation throughout the week.
We are incredibly proud of the resilience and love of learning shown by the Foundation students! It has been fantastic to spend time with each of the students to carry out Reading and Viewing assessments which has provided valuable information to further support all students for the remainder of the year. Thank you to all of our wonderful families for supporting us and the students during these assessment periods.
In Literacy, the Discovery Centre Detectives (our fantastic Foundation students), worked hard to identify and classify nouns that they found on our noun hunt around the classroom and junior school areas! We know that a noun is a person, place, animal or thing. Check out some of the nouns we found in the pictures below! During Reading and Writing sessions, we again focused on using our ‘wow words’ to up level boring sentences and to describe nouns, with help from Vinny Vocabulary!
In Mathematics, we have been learning about clocks. Firstly, it was important for us to learn that clocks don’t always tell us the time – they can’t talk – but they show us the time! We explored the features of a clock and discovered that when the long minute hand is pointing to the 12, we know that the clock is showing something o’clock. The Foundation students had a blast making their own outdoor clock and playing various games to reinforce their understanding of time.
As a part of our Wellbeing program, students have been demonstrating their problem solving skills since coming back to school. It has been fantastic to see and hear Foundation students using their character strengths of teamwork and kindness when playing and communicating with their peers. We are looking forward to exploring Gender and Identity to support Positive Gender Relations as a part of our Respectful Relationships program, over the coming weeks!
Terima kasih,
Miss Jess Tossell, Miss Brooke Henwood, Mrs Amanda Martin
Reminders
- PMP is back from this Friday. The sessions will be run by our amazing PE team – Mrs Embery and Mrs B – as well as the Foundation teachers.
- Please ensure that your child’s uniform and personal belongings, are clearly labelled. This includes hats, drink bottles and lunch containers.
Student Voice
In preparation for writing this week, students were asked to watch Mrs Streitberger's writing prompt and share their ideas about what happened to her. Students did this on Seesaw by leaving a voice comment and will be supported to write about their ideas in class. Here are some of their imaginative ideas!
- "Mrs Streitberger fell in the puddle and the dogs went loose" - Ava
- "I think there was a crocodile in the puddle and it ate Mrs Streitberger" - Elliot
- "Mrs Streitberger slipped and went under the puddle and there was another world" - Rebekah
- "She went down the drain pipe" - Marley
- "Mrs Streitberger disappeared because Thanos snapped his fingers" - Max
Pupil of the Week
FD: Emilio C -
For demonstrating perseverance in writing this week and working hard to challenge yourself to write a problem and solution. You used your knowledge of the Magic 100 words as well as sounding out new words beautifully. Well done Emilio!
FH: Andy H -
For working hard to make and say different o'clock times when the long minute hand is pointing straight up to the 12. You challenged yourself to make, say and explain the time as half past when the long minute hand points down to the 6. Amazing effort Andy!
FJ: Addison D -
For demonstrating perseverance when challenging yourself in Maths to tell the time to the hour. You were able to explain how you knew what the time was by explaining that when the long minute hand is pointing to the 12 it is o'clock. Fantastic work Addi!
