Prep News
Wow! What an exciting and busy start to our final term of prep. It has been fantastic to see the children participating in our class and focus group zoom meetings and uploading their learning to Seesaw.
We have started our new unit on fractions and have been exploring the language of fractions and have been exploring how we can show fractions.
We have been answering the following questions this week by folding paper:
How can I show a half and quarter of a shape?
How do we create quarters and eighths of a shape?
We are also super excited to be returning back to school next week (Monday - Wednesday) and cannot wait to be back all together in our classroom!
See you soon, prep!
Digital Technology - Cyber Safety Project
Our Innovation Leaders, Sophia and Maher, were set the task to provide a Cyber Safety message to the Senior Students, and to present the information in a manner not usual. They drew upon a wide range of skills to do so. For example they
- used Google Docs and Google Meet to collaborate in creating a survey using Google Forms for Senior students to complete.
- used Google Classroom to share links and communicate with the seniors (via their classroom teachers).
- created a Scratch coding project to present their findings and advice. Reusable blocks of code were used to best ensure efficiency. Variables, loops, conditional statements and procedures were also in use.
- created vector images and sound files, then downloaded these files to export them via gmail to be uploaded by a different team member.
To see a presentation with movement, colour, precision, sound and a great safety message, click here, then on the green flag. Thanks to Emma F for assisting in creating one of the images.
P.S look out for a couple of cameo performances
Senior artwork goes live on Darebin facebook
Make sure you check out our Senior’s online exhibition on Darebin Libraries facebook page https://www.facebook.com/darebinlibrariesThe students have painted significant sites of Reservoir using credit cards!
This unique painting technique was taught to them by artist Marion Nicholes. For Marion, "It was inspiring to see all the students willing to have a go. I especially enjoyed their reactions when using the cards in different ways to create a sky, a lake, a swan, rocks or even a train station."
The project was even endorsed by Darebin Mayor Lina Messina “In a time of limited in-person events, Reservoir Story is a wonderful online alternative for sharing this exhibition created by grade 5 and 6 students of St. Gabriel’s Primary School. These beautiful paintings capture the essence of some of our best-known Reservoir landmarks, as seen through the eyes of these talented young community members. I’d like to acknowledge St. Gabriel's Art Teacher, Melanie Vearing, and the Darebin Libraries team for working together to make this lovely community art project happen.”
