Year 6 Public Speaking Competition

Our Year 6 Public Speaking finalists impressed with their confidence and eloquence during their annual competition last Friday. The audience was entertained by topics from ‘Life with a dog’ and ‘A perfect picnic’ to ‘Chasing our dreams’ and ‘Identity’. Congratulations to Lucy Peters and Isabella Menkens for being awarded joint first place and sharing stories of lockdown and the importance of kindness during the COVID-19 pandemic. We extend our congratulations also to Maddison Fellowes in attaining second place for her moving speech about her grandfather and acknowledge Abigail Walker who placed third by sharing how failure is a blessing in disguise.

Ocean Life in Prep

Last Tuesday, the Prep children were thrilled to welcome Richard from Ocean Life Education to the classroom as part of their current Unit of Inquiry. This was a wonderful incursion for the children as Ocean Life provided an interactive hands-on experience with live marine animals. The children were fascinated by the animals and artefacts, and have been inspired to take responsibility for caring for our marine ecosystems. Thank you, Richard, for bringing your wonderful presentation to the Prep children at Clayfield College.

Student Representative Council (SRC) – Photo Competition

The SRC encourages all Primary Students to enter their Photo Competition to raise money for the Cancer Council. There will be a Prep to Year 2, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6 category. For $1 per photo entry, students are asked to capture a natural, manmade or animal image. All students who enter will receive a certificate, with the winner of each category being given the opportunity to select books to the value of $25.

To enter, please complete the form which was sent home in College diaries. All photos are due by Friday, 8 October, and are to be emailed to Mrs Corness at  vcorness@clayfield.qld.edu.au. The SRC will judge the entries and announce the winners at our first Assembly in Term 4. What a wonderful idea for a holiday project!

Baby Give Back

We are very happy to support one of our Year 1 parents, Sandy Iyer, in her request for donations for the Baby Give Back charity. Donations will be gratefully received until Friday, 15 October.

Sandy asks: Do you believe every baby deserves a fair chance and adequate resources? Do you have a baby car seat you no longer use? Or maybe a high chair collecting dust or a pram cluttering your space? Would you consider donating these items to a charity that will lovingly refurbish these items and supply them to families in need?

Baby Give Back helps families in crisis because we believe every baby deserves an equal start. We provide donations via social service agencies and social workers who are qualified to assess a family's need. Our items range from nappies and wipes, through to prams, cots and car seats and everything in between. Everything that leaves our warehouse is thoroughly cleaned, safety checked, in good condition and beautifully packaged for their new family.

This September, we are looking to secure at least 500 car seats to be redistributed to families in need. Car seats tend to be the first thing most parents need. Can you help? Ideally, we would like car seats that are less than 10 years old and have not been in an accident.

Do you have other gently-loved baby items you could donate? Books, bottles, prams, cots or even open packets of nappies? Baby Give Back will gladly accept these donations. Please bring your donations to the Year 1 classroom at School. I will be happy to pick them up and take them to the donation centres. Alternatively, there are two locations that accept donations: Gold Coast 10/15 John Duncan Court, Varsity Lakes QLD. We are open: Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm; Tuesday: 9:00 am - 7:30 pm -  Brisbane 2/97 Jijaws Street, Sumner QLD. We are open: Monday - Thursday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. For a full list of what items are acceptable, please see the link below https://www.babygiveback.org/pages/donate-items
