MERCY WEEK

Catherine McAuley opened the House of Mercy in Dublin in 1827 in response to God’s call to work towards empowering the poor to overcome the crushing poverty in which they lived. Her first schools were primary schools for the improvement of literacy and the teaching of the Catholic faith to those who had no other opportunity to learn.

The Mercy Sisters started small. Initially there were three, Catherine and two companions, however this number blossomed. In ten years, the Sr McAuley’s Order had spread across Ireland and into England. After Catherine’s death there were sufficient numbers of Mercy Sisters to provide help and assistance to people in Newfoundland, the United States, Australia, South America and New Zealand. The cry for help was being answered.

We are here today as living examples of the hard work performed by the Sisters who came before us, as well as the Sisters working today in Sunraysia and all around the world. Inspired by the vision of Catherine McAuley, the college is committed to developing each student, particularly those who are disadvantaged or marginalized, and helping them realise their full potential in an atmosphere of care, respect and joy.

As we gather, let us listen to Catherine’s words: “I leave you free to do what you think best. I am satisfied you will not act imprudently, and this conviction makes me happy.”

God of Mercy, we pray that we may be living examples of

 Catherine’s faith, burning brightly.

May we be ever mindful of the Mercy traditions and values

by embracing them and carrying them into the future.

Bless us with the wisdom to always

allow your Holy Spirit to lead us.

Amen.
