Primary News

Mrs. Vivienne Corness - Assistant Head of Primary

2022 Primary Leadership

As mentioned in the Welcome Back to Term 4 – Primary School News communication, Year 5 students begin the exciting journey of being elected for student leadership positions in 2022.  An outline of the positions and nomination process will be emailed to Year 5 parents and students on Monday 11 October.

Independence

This term is the ideal time to instil some independent habits ahead of the next year of school. If you have been walking in or picking your child up from inside the school grounds, this might be the perfect time to let them walk in and out without assistance. Packing their own bag the night before school and helping with filling their lunchbox and drink bottle are also important skills. Students in Yr 2 will be moving upstairs in the Primary Building in 2022; therefore, allowing them the opportunity to walk in themselves will help with the independent climb next year.

Student Representative Council – Photo Competition

The SRC encourages all Primary students to enter their Photo Competition to raise money for the Cancer Council.

There will be a Prep - Year 2, Years 3 - 4 and Years 5 - 6 category. For $1 per photo entry, students are asked to capture a natural, manmade or animal image. All students who enter will receive a certificate, with the winner of each category being given the opportunity to select books to the value of $25.

To enter, please complete the form which was sent home in Term 3. (More copies are available at the Primary Office). The due date for photos has been extended to Wednesday, 13 October, and are to be emailed to Mrs Corness at vcorness@clayfield.qld.edu.au

The SRC will judge the entries and announce the winners at our first Assembly in Week 2. Thank you to those students who have already submitted entries. We wish you every success in the competition!

Film Festival

This term, Clayfield College will be hosting its inaugural red carpet ‘Shining Lights’ Film Festival. The theme of the festival is ‘Connection’. All students from Prep to Year 6 are eligible to enter in either small groups or as an individual. There will be a Prep to Year 3 and Years 4 to 6 section. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Best Acting
  • Best Storyline
  • Best Costume
  • Best Title
  • Best Production
  • Best Musical/Dance
  • Best Creative use of Green Screen

The overall winner will be the Head of Primary for the Day! The class with the most creative entries will be awarded a pizza party. Entries are due by Tuesday 12 October and are to be submitted to Mrs. Angela Clark via a OneDrive link to aclark@clayfield.qld.edu.au or on a named USB.

Queensland Surf Life Saving Visit

On Tuesday, 12 October, our Prep to Year 6 students will participate in a Beach Safe presentation provided by Queensland Health. The program aims to change behaviours and save lives through an increased understanding of vital beach safety messages. The children will learn how to identify the safe places to swim, understand symbols on beach signs, how to signal for help, how to swim out of a rip, learn about the equipment used by surf lifesavers, and water and sun safety tips.

Baby Give Back

We are very happy to support one of our Year 1 parents, Sandy lyer, in her request for donations for the Baby Give Back charity. Donations will be gratefully received until Friday, 15 October.

Sandy asks

Do you believe every baby deserves a fair chance and adequate resources?
Do you have a baby car seat you no longer use?
Or maybe a high chair collecting dust or a pram cluttering your space?
Would you consider donating these items to a charity who will lovingly refurbish these items and supply them to families in need?

Baby Give Back helps families in crisis because we believe every baby deserves an equal start. We provide donations via social service agencies and social workers who are qualified to assess a family's needs. Our items range from nappies and wipes, prams, cots and car seats and everything in between. Everything that leaves our warehouse is thoroughly cleaned, safety checked, in good condition and beautifully packaged for their new family.

This September, we are looking to secure at least 500 car seats to be redistributed to families in need. Car seats tend to be the first thing most parents need. Can you help?

Ideally, we would like car seats that are less than 10 years old and have not been in an accident.

Do you have other gently-loved baby items you could donate? Books, bottles, prams, cots or even open packets of nappies? Baby Give Back will gladly accept these donations.

Please bring your donations to the Year 1 classroom at School. I will be happy to pick them up and take them to the donation centres. Alternatively, there are two locations that accept donations: Gold Coast 10/15 John Duncan Court, Varsity Lakes QLD.

We are open: Monday (9:00 am - 4:00 pm); Tuesday (9:00 am - 7:30 pm), Wednesday (9:00 am - 4:00 pm), Friday (9:00 am - 4:00 pm); Brisbane 2/97 Jijaws Street, Sumner QLD. We are open: Monday - Thursday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

For a full list of what items are acceptable, please see the link below: https://www.babygiveback.org/pages/donate-items

Primary Support Group

The Primary Support Group (PSG) is a sub-committee of the Clayfield College Parents and Friends Association which provides valuable support to the Primary School. It is made up of an Executive Committee and class parent co-ordinators.

The PSG contributes to the school by helping to build a strong sense of community, organising social events, welcoming new families to the College and also organising fundraising activities. Meetings are held once a month after school drop off and everyone is welcome to attend and get involved.

This year the PSG organised the inaugural School Fun Run, the Mother’s Day Stall, the Father’s Day Stall, and has raised funds to support projects and programs such as the Pre-Prep nature play garden being built at the start of 2022, new STEM provisions for Primary, Year 3 Story Dogs reading program and a shade sail for Year 6.

We would like to thank Beatrice Peters (President), Alison Chalmer (Secretary) and Daniel Aziz (Treasurer) for leading the PSG this year, the class parent co-ordinators and all of the volunteers and families who have supported PSG events in 2021.

The PSG will hold its Annual General Meeting in the Boardroom of the school on 28 October at 8:30 am. At this time all of the positions for the executive (President, Secretary and Treasurer) will be open for nominations.

Please see the information below about the AGM and nominations for the Executive Positions.

If you have any questions about the PSG please email Beatrice Peters at beatricepeters01@gmail.com.
