Horticulture

Over the past week there has been a “rebadging” of learning focuses at the Horticulture section. From now on this hub will be split into three distinct learning environments.

  • Parks and Gardens (Mr Olde) which will predominately focus on the grounds and gardens around the College and front oval.
  • Vegetables (Mrs Morris) will focus on supplying the kitchen with fresh produce for their catering requirements. Some vegetables will be grown for commercial purposes, but the focus will largely turn to our own immediate needs.
  • Lastly is Orchards and Vines (Mr Foster) will include our citrus, avocado and grape varieties.

There are many reasons for this “rebadging”,  a couple are that we hear from students that they are repeating the same learning at Horticulture over and over.  This shift to three distinct hubs in an effort to look at the learning in a different context.

There have also been times that students have wanted to swap hubs for many reasons including some valid ones. The three distinct hubs will offer differing learning targets and production targets, so it is hoped that students will embrace this change.

Year 12 Drive Safe

This week “Drive Safe Australia” have been onsite delivering and assessing two units of competence in the Operation of Light Vehicles and Commercial Vehicles. I welcome any feedback from parents about this course as we aim to deliver a meaningful, relevant and challenging curriculum to students who would for the most, not be in a position to do such at other schools.

I have noted that the timing of the course is far from perfect as many Year 12 students are busily completing outstanding work and unfortunately we had many others miss out on a spot as numbers were limited. Underpinning this, Mr Howell and myself always welcome feedback either good or bad about how the Farm Learning Environment is and the experience your child and your family has had while being here.

Year 12 Departure

Lastly, as we look to wrap up another term, we wish all of our departing Year 12’s the very best over their final days and remind both students and parents that unfortunately the opportunity to make poor choices is very easy when we let our hair down.  We hope and trust that students will finish their Farm experience with all of our staff on a good note.

Farm Skills

We wish the teams who are competing in this years Farm Skills all the best for next Thursday 23rd September.  This competition is run prior to the Perth Royal Show and for all Ag Colleges and schools to compete against one another in a variety of farming events.
