Round the classes

Reception / Year 1: Mrs Measday
It has been a busy start to our last term together. In maths we are looking at different shapes and the patterns they make. We used tangrams to make pictures in art and we are now looking at tessellated shapes. This has really stretched our creativity but we are enjoying the challenge.
We hosted the first assembly of the term and thought creatively about how we sit and what we can see. Because we needed a bigger space for our dance, asking everyone to sit in a horseshoe shape worked really well. We also got to show our brainstorms to share what we did in the holidays and our art pieces.
We are working with Stephen’s class using the Beebots. It is fun being the teacher and showing others how to use different technologies.
Reception / Year 1: Katie
In the past two weeks we have started learning about money and how and why we use it. In literacy we have been working on writing narrative stories and remembering to include lots of creativity. We have also been finishing off our paper mache bowls that we started while the rest of the school was on camp. We are going to enter these in the Uraidla Show. Finally as part of Geography we have been learning about natural and manmade landmarks.
Year 2/3 class: Stephen
In Stephen's Year 2/3 class we are enjoying having Dayna, our student teacher with us. She has been teaching us to use predicting and visualising as reading comprehension strategies. We read some narratives only half way and then had to predict what would happen in the second half. After we recorded our predictions, we checked the other (real) half of the narratives to see how well we predicted. We also had to draw pictures of these narratives - to visualise.
The visualising part means we can be quite creative which is our school focus.
Year 2/3 class: Kelly
This fortnight we have been busy with our recount and narrative writing. It was great to hear what the children got up to in the holidays. For the next couple of weeks we are focusing on narrative writing. In maths we have started revising what we have learnt throughout the year. We have been focusing on number patterns, time, money, place value, multiplication and division. For a warm up for maths, we have started maths mentals again. It is pleasing to see the children go through the answers together and explain their reasoning to their answers.
Year 4/5: Lizzie
In maths, our class has been learning about adding and subtracting decimals.
In writing we are working on improving our narrative writing by focusing on setting and character descriptions.
In design and technology, we have been using Makers' Empire (a 3D design program) to design mazes. We then get to print these on the 3D printer.
Senior class: Sallie
So week 2 is done and dusted! We have been busy preparing for the Music Showcase (students practising, moving chairs, setting up the stage) and getting ready to show our creative side through music.
I have sourced the pavers and now have all the tiles ready to start our mosaics (another way we will be showing our creative talents).
In Maths we have been going back and revising place value and expanded notation. Some students have been looking at positive and negative integers and being challenged by some of the concepts being covered. In English we are working on grammar and punctuation and looking at common word synonyms in preparation for writing a narrative. In Civics and Citizenship we are looking at the constitution and using our creative talents to design a new cover for the constitution.
Congratulations to Tegan who has just represented our district in girls' football. Her team came third overall. Hopefully we will have a photo for our next newsletter. Congratulations to James who made the district cricket side. He will be competing in Week 4.
Science: Zac
The first two weeks have been busy in the science room. All years have shifted their focus towards the topic of Chemical Sciences. We started by recapping prior knowledge concepts for each year level & relating concepts to our everyday life. The R/1 classes started looking at different materials & their everyday uses, while the 2/3s looked at the basic properties of Solids, Liquids & Gases. The 4/5s extended the focus on Matter, while the 6/7s started an investigation on the topic of Rust by comparing different liquids & how quickly they can cause a nail to rust.
P/E: Zac
In PE, the year 4-7s started their focus on golf. We will have a golf coach out for four lessons to teach the students the basics of golf, including hitting for distance and accuracy. The R-3 classes have started the term with a focus on throwing & catching.
Indonesian: Ibu Susan
We have had a super start to the term. The younger classes are learning Apa kabar? How are you? We are having lots of fun with this. The older classes are writing role-plays based on last term’s vocabulary and also revising Indonesian numbers. The plan is to be able to say rehearsed language automatically which is a big challenge!
Gardening: Jo
The Uraidla Show is a few weeks away and the 4/5 students have just enough time to make some scarecrows with a twist.
They are repurposing boxes and plastic pots to make the main structure of the scarecrows and then decorating them. Being creative is the focus for this term so look out for some creative scarecrows at the show.
