Year 5 Report

Term 3 2023

Welcome to Term 3!

Below is a list of essential reminders and upcoming events:

  •  School starts at 8.50am. Ten minutes late each day = 50 minutes of missed learning a week. That’s an entire session of learning!
  • Students are expected to read for half an hour each night and record this in their diaries. Students who have been reading at home have shown greatest growth in all areas of their learning. Half an hour each night really does make a difference!  Students will also need to practice their multiplication facts at home to prepare for our unit of work in multiplication and division in Term 3.
  • Athletics practice day: Students who were selected will be competing in an Athletics day Friday the 28th of July at school against Dallas Brooks Primary School. This will run from 9.00am to 11.30am. This is in preparation for our interschool Athletics carnival at Meadow Glen Athletics stadium on the 11th of August.
  • 5/6 Camp: Camp will be in Week 6 from the 14th to the 16th of August. Students will need to arrive at school no later than 8.30am on Monday the 14th of August and are expected to arrive back at 3.00pm on Wednesday the 16th. Updates will be sent to parents if needed by the Sentral app.
  • Science Week - 7th - 10th August
  • Book Week - 21st - 24th August

Writing

Students will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in Reading to support their writing of information reports. They will have the opportunity to write about a diverse range of topics, choosing subjects they find intriguing and wish to explore further. Throughout this process, students will enhance their ICT skills by publishing their work using Microsoft Word, incorporating a wide array of non-fiction elements like photographs, maps, diagrams, glossaries, and more to enrich their reports.

Speaking and Listening

Throughout Term 3, students will further advance their Speaking and Listening skills by engaging in a variety of activities. These include collaborative group work, presenting their findings on assigned tasks, and engaging in regular reflections during classroom discussions.

Maths

Students will be exploring a variety of strategies in which they solve multiplication and division problems. They will apply this knowledge in measurement, including area and volume. Students will also look at other topics such as addition and subtracting fractions, 3D shapes and angles.

Inquiry

Students will have the opportunity to explore the essence of Australia's democracy and make comparisons with other forms of government. They will gain insights into the three levels of government and some of the key functions of each level. Additionally, students will learn about the intricate process by which a bill transforms into a law.
