Prep Report
Welcome Back Everyone!
The Grade Prep teachers have been busy preparing engaging activities for students and we are excited for all the learning to come in Term Three!
Literacy
In Reading, students will be learning about the purpose and features of non-fiction books. They will learn to identify features such as; the front cover, title, contents page, bolded words and glossary. Students will understand that the purpose of reading a non-fiction book is to learn facts and information about a topic. In Writing, students will continue to complete their weekend recount as well as participate in information writing. They will be given the opportunity to create information reports and books with facts they recall from mentor texts. In Speaking and Listening, students will engage in various oral language experiences, craft activities and games to expose them to new language and vocabulary.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students will consolidate their understanding of base 10 (making 10) in place value at the beginning of the term. They will focus on making numbers using a range of materials including unifix blocks, 10s frames and bundling sticks. Students will practice comparing the numbers they make, deciding which numbers are bigger and smaller and locate numbers on number lines and 100s charts. They will engage in weekly challenging maths tasks which promote problem solving and peer learning. Students will also learn about addition and subtraction and use concrete materials (counters, teddies, 10s frames) to support their understanding of how to solve worded problems. Students will end the term learning about length and mass. They will practice comparing and ordering the length and mass of objects. Students will learn vocabulary such as; ‘longer’, ‘shorter’, ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’ to describe the length and mass of objects.
Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, students will revise the core emotions in the MindfullAus program (joy, anger, disgust, fear, sadness, and surprise) at the beginning of the term. They will also learn about empathy, accepting others and ways respectfully resolve conflict. At the end of the term, students will learn about how to be a good friend, understand what a problem is, ways to solve problems and how to how to express gratitude.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students will engage in our unit ‘Living and Non-Living’. They will learn about what makes something living or non-living and what living things need to survive. Students will participate in investigations, experiments and hands on experiences to explore what living things need.
