Year 5 and 6

Grade 5 - Ryan Condron (Team Leader), Chris Bird, Gill Prentice, Lauren Strachan

Grade 6 - Al Straughan (Team Leader), Kerryn McConachy, Cyara Pittas, James Sadler

As we near the middle of Term 3, it is a great time to reflect on some of the amazing work the Year 5 and 6 students are doing, as well as look forward and prepare for our upcoming events!

Maths

This week, our Year 5 students embarked on an inspiring real-world project where they crafted funding proposals to benefit the Australian community. Their creative ideas ranged from addressing homelessness through innovative housing solutions, to protecting endangered animals, and even spreading joy with concept of providing everyone a donut and milkshake every Friday.

The engagement and enthusiasm displayed by our students was truly remarkable. Not only did they thoroughly enjoy the task, but they also showcased impressive mathematical skills while developing these proposals.

The experience of working on these meaningful projects is designed to give students the opportunity to apply their mathematical skills through problem solving and collaboration. The Year 5 teachers are incredibly proud of the student’s achievements and the passion they demonstrated during this task.

Year 6 Newsroom Incursion

Our Grade 6 students recently took part in an informative webinar on 'Our Digital Thumbprint'. Along with a number of schools from all over Australia, they learnt some new ideas about staying safe online. SuperCar driver Chaz Mostert was able to share some of his own stories about racing and online experiences. The highlight for many was when Vermont Primary School was mentioned by the panel!

Book Week

One of the highlights of the school year is just around the corner, Book Week! This year it’s being held from the 19th to the 25th of August and the theme is Read, Grow, Inspire. Vermont Primary School will hold its annual Book Week parade on Monday 21st August. All students are encouraged to dress up a character from a book of their choice. Be as creative as you like with this!

Science Week at VPS

From Monday 4th September to Friday 8th September, we will be celebrating Science Week at VPS. Three special events for students and families have been planned.

On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 ‘Scientists’ will be leading three science related activities for the rest of the school’s students to participate in. Between recess and lunch, the students will move with their class between three different activities across the whole school, to experience different aspects of science, such as circuits, chemical reactions and the making of bath bombs!

Thursday of science week will bring an amazing incursion to VPS – the Jollybops Science show. More information and payment details are now available on Qkr!. Payment is due for all students by Thursday 31st August.

Science week concludes with our whole school Science Expo on Friday 8th September. Parents and carers are invited to come and experience each year level’s exploration of science and associated displays. The Expo will be open for families to view from 3pm until 5pm in the school stadium.
