Book Week

One of the highlights of the school year is just around the corner, Book Week! This year it’s being held from the 19th to the 25th of August and the theme is Read, Grow, Inspire. Vermont Primary School will hold its annual Book Week parade on Monday 21st August. All students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book of their choice. Be as creative as you like with this!

Michael Wagner Author Visit

On Tuesday 29th August, we have Michael Wagner, the well-known author, coming out to speak to our students. Michael has over 80-plus titles including a 20-book series about the funny and exciting sporting adventures of Maxx Rumble, six books about a family called The Undys, a heart-warming first reader called Pig Dude: He Can Do ANYTHING! and the acclaimed picture books Why I Love Footy and Bear Make Den. We look forward to hearing him speak!

There is an opportunity to purchase one of Michael's books before the event. Read the flyer below for more information.

Writing Competition - Grow!

This year we will be holding a writing competition that is open to all students. The topic for the writing competition is Grow! Students are welcome to take this theme any way they like and can write in any genre, for example, writing a poem about an animal that grows, writing a procedural piece about a favourite plant, writing a narrative about a student that wanted to be a basketballer so they took a potion to grow. There will be 4 different categories:

  • Foundation
  • Grade 1 and 2
  • Grade 3 and 4
  • Grade 5 and 6

If your child has any questions, encourage them to ask their classroom teacher.

MS Readathon

This year Vermont Primary School is participating in the MS Readathon. The MS Readathon is a fundraiser which has been supporting people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 45 years. It aims to bring together the enjoyment of reading and the inspiration of creating a difference in the lives of people living with MS. The MS Readathon runs for the month of August. Vermont Primary has almost 100 students signed up and it would be good to keep on adding to this total. If you would like your child to participate in the MS Readathon and represent Vermont Primary School, you can register your child by simply heading to the Readathon website: https://www.msreadathon.org.au/join/VermontPrimarySchool

- Select ‘Register’

- Click ‘My children to read’

- Fill in the contact details of a parent/guardian

- Enter your child’s details and add Vermont Primary School

- Follow prompts until registration is complete.

**A reminder to not write your child’s surname. Their first name, or first name and surname initial, and their grade is all that is required (e.g. Jimmy S 4JS).

If you have any queries regarding this year’s MS Readathon, please feel free to contact:

Writing Challenge

If your child enjoys their writing and is keen to write for enjoyment at home, below is a prompt that you could ask your child to write about.

You dig the world’s deepest hole. What lies at the bottom?

Comprehension Question

This fortnight’s questions are:

  • Do the settings in your story change? Describe.
  • What character do you remember the most? Why do you remember him/her?
  • Is the setting of your story like a place that you have seen before?
