School Captains'

Address

Hey JMSS,

We hope students have enjoyed the start of Term 3 so far, with NAIDOC week and Harmony Day kicking us off in Week 1. Harmony day gave everyone an opportunity to proudly honour their culture, dressing up in traditional clothing and getting on stage to display unique performances and music which was a wonderful experience for all involved.

Students were also able to explore and celebrate Indigenous Australian culture with many learning materials exhibited across the school. These included the movie “The Final Quarter” about Adam Goodes’ long journey fighting racism in Australia, bios about historically significant Indigenous individuals, and a Kahoot through which we could learn important and intriguing facts about our First Nations people’s history.

The end of June saw the conclusion of the mental health push up challenge. In JMSS’ proud fashion we raised a whopping $3115 as a school, with 30 participants collectively completing 105,481 pushups from the 1st to the 23rd of July. This effort was to raise awareness and support for the 3144 Australians who took their lives in 2021. Thank you to everyone who took part in this challenge for all of your hard work and dedication!

It is also that time of year again! Leadership applications are now open to Year 10s and 11s. Next year, the leadership system will fully implement the changes the 2022 and 2023 leaders have formulated in discussion with the current Parliament and principal team. The Parliament structure will now be made purely of designated ‘Parliamentarians’, to be elected as an independent role after the student leaders are chosen for 2024. The leaders themselves will include house and house vice captains, art captains, debating captains, and music captains, as well as four (rather than two) school captains that will work as a team.

As the current school captains ourselves, we can vouch that the experience is well worth the work. The opportunity is uniquely versatile as the school has access to some amazing individuals and institutions, and any role of leadership is sure to develop the skills that universities and employers love. There is no such thing as the “perfect candidate” because it is the fact that everyone brings something new that makes a great leadership team! If you have a passion for improving the vision and culture of our school, we highly encourage you to put your name forward, or encourage someone you know would appreciate it.

Additionally, as we approach the end of the year, we would like to remind everyone that we have a form open for submission for “additional” diploma points, as in if you feel like you represented the school at an event (for example Model UN, writing competitions) and didn’t receive a diploma point for it. This form is for you! Click on the link here or check out the poster on the physical noticeboard for a handy QR code.

Finally, good luck to everyone for the term ahead. This one is the most difficult with SACs coming thick and fast for the next seven weeks. Make sure to get plenty of rest and time outdoors so that you can reserve some energy for the exam season!

Stay cool,

Your school captains,

Cameron, Alexia, Caitlin, Michael.

Weekly Bulletins
