YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Term 3

Early leavers

Staff have noticed an increasing number of students leaving the college before the end of the day to catch public transport. Students have begun leaving at 2.20pm, 2.30pm and even earlier in some instances. Our staff are concerned about the learning time that some students are missing each day, especially when this is stretched out of a week, a month, a term.

Our expectation is that students are present for all learning and our teachers prepare learning between 9 and 3. This is especially improtant at a VCE Level, where time is particularly precious. We understand the difficulty for some families in negotiating  public transport, and we ask for your support in ensuring students are attending during scheduled class times and don't miss out on important learning and school work. If you wish to discuss, please contact Year 11 LCL Claire Sullivan or Year 12 LCL Brett Bullock.

Thank you for your support, we want the best academic outcomes for our students

Year 10

Year 10 students completed a session with Deakin Uni students last week Tuesday the 8th called Myth Busters at WHC. It was a dynamic workshop that discussed common myths about university. Led by current Deakin students, the workshop aims to provide real insights into university life by tackling students' misconceptions and providing inspiring information about entry, accessibility, pathways, affordability, and student life.

Next Monday the 21st is a full day excursion for all year 10 students to Deakin Warun Ponds.  Students will spend a day at Deakin University and immerse themselves in on-campus experiences. Students will gain key insights into uni life through hands-on learning, access to innovative learning spaces and will also get the chance to meet current Deakin university students to ask their questions and talk about university life.

A reminder that some students still require a lock on their locker.

Year 11

The year 11 community have had a busy fortnight of sport, excursions, awards, and house events. The senior girls football team played in the first round of finals last Wednesday in Ballarat. After a comfortable win in the quarter final against Marist College Bendigo, the girls played the semifinal against Melbourne Girls College [MGC]. This was a close match, with MGC getting a run on in the last quarter and fighting their way back. The girls played exceptionally well as a team and came away the winners. They all showed a lot of determination and grit, playing two full matches back-to-back. Kirra Robinson, Meg Alsop, Amber Towart and Caitlin Charles were stand outs on ground. They now progress through to the state final next Thursday at La Trobe Bundoora. Parents and friends are encouraged to come along and show their support on the day.

Year 11 P.E students went on an excursion where they participated in a range of physical activities to measure different components of fitness. They went to the driving range, played mini golf and went rock climbing. They also got to visit a puppy day care, which was very exciting for all involved. All the students had a great day out and enjoyed getting out from school for the day. Year 11 students have also been playing in the senior student/staff netball on a Thursday afternoon. Blue House got their first win on the board this week over an unlucky Green house, with Xavier Nelson and Ryan Perkins the standout student players. Next week Red house and yellow house play, with both teams undefeated so far.

A big congratulations to all the year 11 students who received an award at the Semester 1 Celebration Lunch last Friday. These students were recognised for their excellent academic outcomes and the hard work they have put into their learning. All students should be incredibly proud of themselves. Keep up the great work! A special mention to – Theo Ramirez, Jordi Seager, Danielle Rhodes, Kade Angelone-Coburn, Evie Christopher, Dylan Bennett, Steph Whatley, Amber Towart and Aras Veral who received multiple awards.

Year 11 PE excursion

On Friday the 4th of August the Year 11 Physical Education classes together investigated different forms of Physical Activity through participation in Golf activities, including mini golf and using a driving range, and rock bouldering experiences. Students were able to use these experiences to gain an appreciation of the level of physical activity required for health benefits, and how participation in physical activity can vary across the lifespan.

Thank you to the Curlewis Golf Club and Industry Boulders for facilitating activities for our students.

Year 12

Morning tea

This week 12A provided morning tea for the rest of the year level to bring the different groups together in the last of the term. Well done to the students for baking up a storm – with some very tasty options being provided.

Thanks Lily Fowler for organising this – next week 12B has the chance to demonstrate their cooking/entertaining skills for their friends and colleagues.

I also have to give a big shout out to the VCAL students for their work in the WEST CAFÉ during the week for recess and lunches bringing their barista skills and providing coffee and hot chocolates to the college and making homemade slices and cupcakes for the staff and students.  Great Job.

Finally, Ms. Loe is available to help with VTAC applications and SEAS applications for those wishing to enter tertiary education. If anyone needs help, please see Ms. Loe and organise an appointment time.
