Year 8 – Exploring the World of Poetry – Unleashing the Power of Words and Imagery

Our year 8 students have been delving into the magic of literary elements, uncovering the impact of word choice, and embracing the art of poetic expression. In a recent lesson, they focused on imagery, learning how words can evoke the senses and create vivid mental landscapes. Through close reading and analysis, they unearthed the intricate ways poets craft imagery, leading to a collection of poems that beautifully showcase their evolving understanding of language and the power it holds.

We are incredibly proud to share with you, a collection of poems penned by some of our talented students.

John Tattersall

In the land down under,

Footy flies high,

Player’s leap

Like kangaroos in the sky.

The oval,

A colourful sight,

Where passion and skill collide,

Day and night.

Alby Robertson

The sunlight twinkles off the water

Like bright stars in the night sky.

Waves come crashing down,

Like rolling thunder while the kids squeal with delight.

Pungent sunscreen on my skin

Mixes with the fishy, earthy smell of the sea.

The bitter and sharp taste of the sand

Mixes with my sandwich.

Sharp and rough rocks under my feet,

As I step lightly around rock pools.

Kairi Samphanh

Lots of clouds in the sky,

The boy sat inside.

His mood was dry,

As he let out a sigh.

Leonardo Wintels

In the court’s embrace

The ball takes flight,

As players soar,

With all their might.

The sound of sneakers

Squeaking on the floor,

A game of passion and teamwork

Forevermore.

Cory Masters

In a vibrant grassland,

Whispers of wind through the tall trees.

Birdsong dances in the air,

Nature’s evenness, a sight to remember.

Year 9

On Wednesday 16th August, Parallel Sports came out to the school to take our Year 9 Physical Education class’ through a session of Wheelchair Basketball. The objective of the session was to give students an opportunity to experience what it is like to be in a wheelchair in an aim to build empathy and gratefulness but also to educate students on the possibilities that sport can provide to those who are wheelchair bound. Our students were engaged for the entire lesson and not only discovered how to manoeuvre a sport wheelchair but enjoyed the challenge of thinking their way through the game which they did not want to end.

Music

Start learning an instrument in 2023

Would you like to learn an instrument?

Would you like to share the joy of creating music in a social setting?

The Instrumental Music Programis a great opportunity for students at WHC to learn a musical instrument or participate in vocal training.

Learning music can help students’ self-confidence, self-discipline and teamwork. Music helps students progress in other important learning areas such as Maths and English. Music Australia also notes that countries with a strong focus on music education tend to have higher scores in literacy and numeracy. Engaging music programs have been shown to help with attendance and can be particularly beneficial for students who are not achieving well in school.

Instrumental tuition is offered at WHC for bass and electric guitar, drums, keyboard/piano and vocal, as well as bass (trumpet, trombone, euphonium) and woodwind (saxophone, clarinet, flute).

By participating in a 50-minute lesson each week, students build the technical skills and knowledge to play and perform on their own and with WHC ensembles.

It’s not too late to join the Instrumental Music program in 2023. To enrol and for more information, please contact Matthew Bolton or Christina Bowden on 5277 1177.
