Units 3&4 Model United Nations French Excursion

On July 21, a group of Units ¾ French students went to the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership to partake in a model United Nations. The day was run to simulate the proceedings of the real-life UN general assembly in New York, where students negotiated international political cooperation regarding climate change and protecting the environment in the French language. The French students would work in teams representing individual countries that are members of the United Nations. The countries present at the model UN would work from a draft resolution intended to be amended into the UN charter, with specific commitments that countries will have to uphold if the draft resolution passes through.

On the day, the countries discussed to modify and change according to their individual country’s environmental stances. As two teams, the students researched their respective country’s stances on climate change, and then presented a statement of their country’s environmental stance in front of the general assembly, declaring their intentions to modify the draft resolution.

Overall, the model UN was a terrific French language learning experience, as throughout the day, students conversed with each other in French, gaining valuable fluency in the language. The opportunity allowed units ¾ French students to debate on how countries would collectively respond to the climate crisis. This experience was an exciting way to practice the French language and immerse oneself in the international purpose of the United Nations.

Thank you very much to Ms Sly who offered this opportunity to the Units 3&4 French students, and for Ms Kamimura who travelled to the venue to support us there on the day.

Unit 3/4 Japanese Exam Preparation Workshop

On Monday, June 26, the Unit 3/4 Japanese students had the opportunity to participate in a joint workshop with teachers and students from various schools. The workshop took place at the Library at the Docks and comprised several sub workshops, each led by different teachers, focusing on various aspects of the Unit 3/4 VCE Japanese curriculum. We covered techniques in writing, listening, and reading, as well as engaging in speaking activities through discussions and conversations. For lunch, the Japanese students visited Dohtonbori restaurant to enjoy Okonomiyaki, a popular Japanese savory pancake that allows you to customise your toppings and cook it yourself. The name "Okonomi" translates to "as you like" and "yaki" means grilled or cooked, perfectly capturing the dish's customisable nature. Overall, the workshop provided valuable insights and advice that will undoubtedly benefit all the Japanese students involved.
