Interschool Chess Competition

On Monday the 14th August, Heathmont College hosted its first Interschool Chess competition in the Hope Centre. A team of Heathmont students from across Years 7 to 10 took on students from Mazenod across 7 rounds of battle. While Mazenod took home the individual and team trophies, our students competed admirably throughout the day.

Congratulations to Mitchell Taylor and Devlin Edwards on their medals and their State qualifications.  The Secondary Open State Final event will be held at St Oliver Plunkett School in Pascoe Vale on Mon 9th October.

And a big thank you to all of your students for making it a great day and well done to all of them on their efforts at the board.  My impression was very much that they all improved their chessboard knowledge and thinking skills as the day went on.  Several of them gave the tournament convenor and Chessmaster Tim Broom a terrific battle in the simul games at the end of the day, when he played against all 12 students at the same time - lots of tricky endgames to play!
