NAPLAN 2022

Dear parents and carers and staff,

I am pleased to tell you that our 2022 NAPLAN results have been published, and that they are very good.

Our performance in the percentage of students attaining scores in the top two bands was higher (in some areas significantly so) than “like” schools across all domains (reading, writing, numeracy, spelling, punctuation and grammar). They are set out in the table below.

“Like” schools, that is those of comparable size, socio-economic status, rurality, and percentage of families with a non-English speaking background, are what we are interested in comparing ourselves to. This is because these factors confer educational advantage (or disadvantage) and we want to compare like for like schools to get a sense of the quality of our own school’s performance.

Writing292415
Numeracy393120
Spelling282417
Grammar & Punctuation383321

Two other things need to be recognised.

One, although our year7 data was also very good, we don’t “own” much of that result, as those students have only been with us for about a term prior to the test. So, we don’t place too much stock on the year 7 data when considering our performance as a school.

Two, because NAPLAN was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, we don’t have access to the growth data for this group of year 9 students. This is important because, whilst we are very pleased with these results, our primary focus is on achieving high growth in the learning of our students, regardless of their starting point.

As in 2021, NAPLAN Certificates of Achievement will be awarded and distributed to schools for students in Year 9 who have achieved excellence through receiving a result in the top band (Band 10) for Reading or Numeracy.

I am pleased to say 17 of our year 9 students will be awarded these certificates for reading, and a further 25 for numeracy.

In closing, these results are excellent and worthy of acknowledgement and celebration. I want to thank our teachers, students and parents/carers for their hard work in making them possible.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Minack

Principal
