Faculty News

It was delightful to see so many of last year’s graduating class at the rescheduled Day of Excellence assembly. After two challenging years, it was heartening to meet such talented and mature young men and celebrate their all-the-more-impressive academic successes. Tellingly, of the top five ranked students in terms of their ATAR, for the four who took a VCE Humanities subject, in each case this turned out to be their highest VTAC score (including for last year’s Dux, James Russell). Particular congratulations should be extended to Cameron McEwan (and his Geography teachers Mr Adrian De Fanti and Mr Mike

Pearson) who in July was awarded the highly prestigious Premier’s Award for his outstanding performance in VCE Geography, where he scored a ‘perfect’ 50 study score. Given that this year’s examinations are fast approaching, on behalf of the entire faculty, I would like to extend our very best wishes, and a hearty ‘good luck’, to all our Year 11 and Year 12 students sitting VCE exams this term.

In more good news, congratulations should be extended to our College Captain, Nathanial Louey, who recently won 1st Prize in the Monash University Social Sciences Essay Competition (for secondary students) for his Politics essay entitled: Australia - A Middle Power with Great Responsibility. His essay analysed, in Nathanial’s words, “Australia's responsibility in mitigating climate change and the diplomatic consequences of its inaction, especially the deterioration of Australia's influence within the Indo-Pacific”, topics we cover in detail in VCE 3/4 Global Politics.

In more bittersweet news, after ten years on the faculty, Mr Rob Mann will be leaving the College at the end of the year to take up a leadership position at Melbourne Grammar School. Rob has been an outstanding senior History teacher, leaving a legacy of outstanding VCE History Revolutions results, but just as importantly, he has been a valued colleague who will be sorely missed. I would also like to thank Mr Noel McGarry for his years of service as a History teacher, who relocated back to Ireland with his family in August. We, of course, wish them both every success in their new roles.
