Our Learning Story

Every week at Wollert Primary School is 'Book Week'.
Instilling a love of reading in our students has always been part of the Wollert Primary School philosophy. Our students are exposed to high-quality daily literacy sessions that encompass exposure to a wide variety of texts (books, videos, paintings, infographics, images, photographs, audiobooks etc.).
This week children read and critiqued the award winners of the 'Children's Books of the Year' and participated in reading activities. Their wonderful work is now displayed on the walls of their Learning Community as a memory of Book Week 2022.
This week we enjoyed celebrating the wonder, joy, and curiosity that books can provide. Many students across the school shared their favourite books from home, participated in our scavenger hunt and dressed as their favourite book characters.
Our 'Book Week Parade' was a highlight for many, with our wonderful community joining in the celebrations. The Wollert Dalmatians, led by the evil Cruella and Horace, paraded around the gym, followed by all our wonderful students and the Education Support Team dressed as their favourite characters. Energy levels were high, costumes were brilliant, and JOY was spread as our Book Week celebrations came to a close.
We are already looking forward to next year!
We have been overwhelmed with pictures of our students reading their favourite books, in their favourite places and even featuring some four-legged creatures. All names were randomly placed onto a lucky wheel, and the winners were selected.
We also received many entries for the Reading Scavenger Hunt, with Koda (1/2 C) being selected as our lucky winner. Thank you to all students and families for entering; we look forward to our next competition.
Congratulations to our Selfie Competition winners, Eleanore (Prep C), Jazz (Prep A), Kabir (1/2 C), and Rio (Prep B).
Book Week celebrates Australian authors and illustrators; it is also a time to discuss the importance of reading during childhood.
Wollert Primary School strongly recommends the daily practice of literacy skills by reading at home every night. Our students in P-2 are provided with 'Take Home Reading' diaries and bags to support building and maintaining this routine. A 'levelled' text, another way of saying a book that your child should be able to read independently, is also provided to support this program.
Our students in years 3-6 use a reading log that states their identified reading goal, and the books read to achieve the goal. Students have the agency to read a book from home, borrow from our classroom libraries, or their teacher may recommend a levelled text to support their goals.
There are many ways you can foster a love of reading from home. This begins with creating a reading routine that provides a small amount of uninterrupted time for reading. In addition, we recommend exposing your child to reading a wide variety of texts, e.g. digital books, audiobooks, magazines, catalogues, recipes etc.
Other ways you can foster reading at home include:
-Asking questions about what your child is reading.
-Discussing their reading goals.
-Celebrating milestones in their reading log or diary.
-Reading with your child or having them read aloud.
-Visiting the local library.
-Trying new genres of books.
-Reading books in their first language.
We could not be more grateful for our WONDERFUL WOLLERT community.
A BIG thank you to all the families that donated books for our libraries. We will ensure they are looked after and enjoyed by many for years to come!
We accept book donations all year round. If you ever clean out your bookshelves, we are happy to take them off your hands.
