Congratulations also to the St. Gerard Majella Choir, who won three out of fours sections and took home the choral Aggregate for schools under 400 students.

We were very grateful to the supporters in the audience. Thank you to the teachers who worked so hard preparing these ensembles, particularly Mr Robert Johnstone, Mrs Thorpe, Mrs Willis and Mrs Wright. We also thank Mrs Thorpe who stepped up at very short notice to play a lot of accompaniment for solo students.

Congratulations to all students who competed in individual items in the Eisteddfod. We had strong representation in music, particularly in singing. We also had successful competitors in Speech and drama sections and also in dance.

Welcome to Mr Jon Christo who joins our Instrumental Music Department this term. Jon is a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist with vast teaching experience. Jon has taught in Brisbane schools and recently at Cairns State High School and Edge Hill State School. He is a celebrated conductor and has previously led both Brisbane Brass and Cairns Brass to multiple state and national titles. Jon is a former casual trumpet player with Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He currently has a number of former students studying in tertiary music institutions throughout Australia. Jon will be teaching wind, brass and percussion to SMCC and SGM students. We are excited to have Jon in our department.

Save the date!  On Wednesday evening, the 7th of September from 6:30 to 8:30pm, we are having an Instrumental Music Department concert displaying all of our music ensembles, and including some ensembles from our primary school. This will be held in our wonderful new Hugh O’Brien Centre.
