Dream the future of education in a post Covid-19 world

A group of Year 10 students came together during Education Week with a group of senior citizens to celebrate the highlights of their education and imagine what education in the next 50 years could be. They shared stories of their own experiences and dreamed for a positive future where the environment was cared for, they were more connected to community, and all decided that the most important thing to produce the biggest impact was the special relationships formed between teachers and students. These relationships are what we all celebrated whether it was 90 years ago or 5 years ago. Everyone had a special teacher who had made a difference in their lives and hoped that this was a focus for teachers in the future too.

This Education Week 2022 activity was presented by Communities of Wellbeing Inc, Maroondah City Council and Eastland in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education and Training.

We had the opportunity to go speak to some elders of the community which was such a great experience and everyone had so much fun. We were in small groups of about 3 kids and 2 elders where we spoke about many topics like schooling, childhood and more. We all learnt so much about them and their childhood which was so interesting and we found out how different everything is now compared to back then. Our group got the opportunity to speak to  and Russel who were husband and wife and Russel was a crossing man at a school nearby which I found so cool. I loved going and talking to them because I had so much fun and learnt so much, it was such a great experience and would do it again in a heartbeat.

When I went on the ‘dream of the future’ excursion the guy I was partnered with was Ross. We just talked about what his favorite things about school were and how they were different to mine and what he used to do during a day at school compared to what I do. His advice for me and the future generation was to always smile and try and fix your mistakes.
