Cocurricular & Sport Report

Joe Priest

The students have been busy outside of the classroom over the last fortnight. This having all happened in some extremely challenging weather conditions. The cold front that moved through Orange has certainly been testing the resilience of our students and staff.

AICES Cross-Country

On Wednesday 1st June 25 students travelled to Sydney to compete in the AICES Cross Country event. The trip was an eventful on with freezing conditions in the morning at 5.30am and a quick detour through Oberon on route to the event. We arrived in time to walk the course which turned out to be a very wet cross-country course. Our students competed well on the day in amongst a very high standard of competition.

Congratulations to the 13s girls who qualified as a team and to Sophie Martin who qualified as an individual.

Equestrian

The Kinross Wolaroi Equestrian team took 34 riders to the Northwest Equestrian Expo in Coonabarabran over the weekend. All our riders were fantastic ambassadors for the school. Multiple events over the five days meant that many of our riders were up at 6.00am preparing their horses for a long day of events and often not finishing with their duties until well after dark. It was fantastic to watch the equestrian team in action and it was clear how much work all the students have put into their riding in preparation for the event.

Netball Roundup

Our 1sts Netball showed excellent sportsmanship on the weekend agreeing to end their game early after an opposition player fractured her ankle during the game. Opposing players have passed their appreciation onto our staff for displaying that level of sportsmanship on the weekend. Well done the girls who are excellent ambassadors for our school.

Hockey

Timberwolves vs CYMS – Win 2-0

The last game on Smith field Monday night saw a depleted Timberwolves outfit battle with CYMS Magic.

Despite 6 regulars being unavailable through injury, illness or representative duties the Timberwolves managed to secure a hard fought 2-nil victory over CYMS Magic.  Thanks to KWS friends Chloe Robinson, Harrison Sharpe, Charlie Neville and Tom Patton for enabling us to form a full side.  You all helped make us competitive and we appreciated your significant contribution.

Timberwolf forwards created many attacking raids that were repelled by skilful and determined CYMS defenders.  Timberwolves persisted to finish a fast paced first half 1-nil up.

Some really nice passing amongst the midfielders Mac, Phoebe, James and Taylah, put Timberwolves in a strong position and gave the Magic little hope.

Massive work rate and some really valuable leads by James, Lazo and Jimmy created plenty of passing options for our playmakers Taylah Phoebe and Mac Dylan was brave to volunteer to be goalie and made several fine saves. His banter always encouraging his Timberwolves team mates and sometimes annoying for the Magic. Tom finished a nice cross from Lazo to seal the deal in the second half.

Well done team!

KWS Cavaliers vs CYMS

The freezing weather didn’t stop the girls from competing at their potential. Cavaliers attacked playing strong, applying pressure on the opposing team which resulted in Nell Smith scoring an excellent goal for the Cavaliers. Strong aggression shown from the defenders, Elke Sweetapple and Bonnie Leighton kept the Cavaliers in the game. Unfortunately, Cyms came out with the win, despite the Cavaliers continuous teamwork and strength throughout the game.

KWS Knicks

The Knicks had a difficult game last week. The wind was howling, the rain was falling, the temperature was low and team numbers were down.

Rahni and Milli stepped in to captain the team, Marco and Lucas fought aggressively in defence and Javier made some fantastic saves in goal. Ally, Caitlyn, Austin, Maddi and David and Emma all worked hard in the midfield and as forwards, even if we didn't get the ball much past halfway!

Skills are developing as is the talking on the pitch. Our next win is only a game away!

KWS Warriors vs KWS Bulls

Despite the freezing conditions the mighty Warriors were running hot. Against a depleted Bulls outfit we offered some help and then did our best in trying conditions.

Max played very well in goal (for both sides) and the Kandapan connection went head to head for most of the game. It was great to see the return of our secret weapon (Tessa) who showed why she is feared by opposition backs. Grace and Lulu scored a brace of goals in our 6-0 win.

Now a well-earned and warm rest for a week.

KWS Heat vs Molong

The Heat played a cracking game one Friday evening against a very strong Molong side. We were missing a few players due to illness but the rest of the team stepped up to the plate and played a very positive game. Molong scored a well-constructed goal in the first few minutes which took the game to another level and ignited the competitive side of the Heat! Zoe was defiant in defence shutting down nearly all of the Molong attack and Luca made some incredible saves as goalie to keep Molong from scoring again. Swifty was unlucky to miss a cracking shot at goal on the buzzer as it rebounded off the right post.

In the second half, possession was split equally between the 2 sides. Bianca and Phoebe showed their experience and expertise on and off the ball making great leads and dispossessing Molong where they could. Maddy did extremely well in multiple positions and make some fantastic tackles, working well with Lucy and Gretel on the left-hand side.

Unfortunately, after a fantastic game, the Heat were defeated by Molong 1-0. At training we will work on making the most of our attacking opportunities, holding our structure and counterattack. We will get them next time!

Raptors vs Molong

Monday night saw the Raptors face the Molong Collies. In freezing conditions the girls took to the field and spent the entire time working together, building attack and saving numerous attempts at goal. A huge shout out to Tessa Lawson as goal keeper for her courage in defending against balls that were flying at her, a brilliant effort!!

Thanks to all our team for their tireless efforts, you played without a full team in less than ideal conditions, you were brave, resilient and never gave up, still finding a way to smile and having a great time (with the exception of Charlotte who was clearly frozen and unable to move more than 5m without feeling Iike her body was breaking apart! 😊) You continue to improve each week and I look forward to seeing where we go each round.

Netball

An inspirational team have stayed strong after a disappointing loss the previous week and lifted their heads to claim a convincing, come-from-behind victory once again over the KWS Magpies.

Zielle, Alicia and Lilla, nailed an incredible number of shots and were strong competitors for the few rebounds required. The defence and mid-court built-up their game as the match progressed; "We were unhappy with ourselves at first quarter time and I knew we had so much more to give," Eleanor said. "We weren't playing the game that we said we would play but what a response from all nine players who took the court that afternoon - it was a blinder of a second and third quarter,” said Jade who made a debut appearance in Centre position, far from her GK role.

The Giants racked-up multiple unforced turnovers in attack during the first quarter, with coach Grogan lamenting: "We're wasting too many opportunities... we've given ourselves opportunities to get into the game and we've just thrown them away." The Giant’s Joanne Zhang and Prue Donnelly finally began to quell the rampant centre court opposition with a flurry of deflections of their centre passes. Likewise, impressive intercepts from Eleanor Matheson-Clarke were witnessed as she used exceptional body positioning in the role of Goal Keeper. Add the new combination of Jade McLean (C), Sylvia de Graaff (WA) and Lilla Attenborough (GA) off the offensive centre pass, and the Giants were led to an eventual win over the opposition. The Giants had the bye in the following round. Coach Ms Grogan.

15A’s Netball

The mighty 15A’s showed serious grit on Saturday as they took the court against OAGS ACES, who were 5th on the ladder. Being aware that we were sitting at 6th, this was the game to win! With the wing span of Prue and Xanthe in the defensive circle and the powers of Pip and Grace through the centre, there was no stopping this team. Multiple turnovers in the opposing circle and spot on shooting from Alice and Penny lead to some ladder movement, after a win! Particular mention must go to Grace, for her ability to motivate the team with a single sentence at half time, making my job almost redundant… but then, who would bring the lollies for half time?! We look forward to a break over the long weekend and coming back to play OHS. Thank you as always, to parent scorers and cheerleaders!

KWS 1sts

KWS 1sts played Orange City in what was a fantastic game of netball. Evie Hall, Emily Turner and Ava McMillan held a high accuracy throughout the game and played a strong attacking game.

With a number of unforced errors from the 1sts it saw the score increasing in the second and third quarter. The girls defensive play throughout the game was outstanding. In particular Claudia Haseler, Trixie Hall and Xanthe Staniforth made a number of intercepts that put pressure on the Orange City attacking end.

Whilst the final score was 36-56 it must be noted that the game was called early due to an injury. More importantly it was the Kinross 1sts team that decided to forfeit the remainder of the fourth quarter due to an opposing player suffering quite a serious ankle injury. As a result, I received two messages after the game thanking the girls for their outstanding sportsmanship and for displaying such kindness and maturity. I was extremely proud of them and am looking forward to our next match in two weeks’ time.

Football

KWS First XI Football v CYMS Loss  1-0

KWS First XI Football v Barnstoneworth WON 2-0

A fabulous couple of days of Football saw the First XI playing two games back-to-back over the weekend, with a very hard-fought and well-earned happy ending occurring on Sunday afternoon. After struggling a little through the first half dozen rounds with injuries, absences, illnesses and cohesion, the Saturday game against the well-oiled CYMS machine saw us match it with them for almost the entire playing period. We were perhaps a little unlucky not to score a goal and go ahead, and maybe the same can be said for CYMS, and they then made the most of one opportunity to go ahead 1-0 late in the game. With Mr Smedley and Mr Willis working hard on process and drills, the fruits of their labours were on display for all to see, as passing sequences, off the ball play and overall fitness had the opposition backtracking and a little worried.

The Sunday game provided another great opportunity for the team to display their hard work on the paddock, as we were elevated to ‘match of the day’ status on the main pitch at Jack Brabham. For the past few weeks we have held teams scoreless for the first 25 or so minutes in each half, only to have things drift away in the latter stages of a match. Not on this day.  As the tenseness of a 0-0 scoreline saw the opposition become frustrated with both our high quality play and themselves, the highlight of the big colour screen screaming “Gooooaaaalll” as we moved ahead late in the game was a moment to savour.  Not only that, but a few minutes later another well-worked passage of play saw us put the result beyond doubt. The heartaches of the past 6 weeks are now behind the team, with perseverance, self-belief, and sheer hard work paying off. Congratulations to all players, onward and upward!

Rugby

With Rugby season well upon us, on behalf of our Rugby Community I would like to extend a congratulations to the seven young men who have been selected represent ISA at the NSW Schoolboys Championships to be held over the next few weeks. Well done to Arnie Tancred (ISA 1st XV), Luke Dominello (ISA 2nd XV) and Jono Rasmussen and Jake Chudleigh (ISA 3rd XV). We are also represented in the 16s by Clancy Lawler and Jack Tink (U16s 1st XV) and Robert Bourke (U16s 2nd XV). Best of luck to these young men.

Our ISA Competition began last Saturday and it was a tough day at the office. Results did not go our way apart from our U15A`s who muscled up and beat Oakhill 19 - 12. Across the other grades we were beaten, but we weren`t beat up! It was pleasing to see the physicality our boys displayed, our commitment is there and if we keep working, result will come. With no games this weekend it is a chance to rest some sore bodies before we regain focus for the St Greg's fixture.
