Book Week

Last week LNPS celebrated the National CBCA Book Week! Throughout the week students and staff engaged in many exciting learning experiences. We started off the Book Week celebrations with an author visit. Kristin Martin is a  South Australian author and poet, who explored the world of poetry with us. On Wednesday we participated in electives around the theme of Reading is My Secret Power, where we experienced the power of reading through the themes of belonging, persistence, risk taking, curiosity and humour.

Our Big Backyard Project (OBBY)

Our Big Backyard (OBBY) is a nature-based play program for children under 12, that encourages family connectedness through play and exploration.  This project has a community engagement focus where families and children are consulted and encouraged to explore where they live and who they share the community with.  Our Big Backyard (OBBY) was first developed and implemented in Southern Adelaide, incorporating Aldinga and Christies Beach. The resources developed through this project include:

children’s play maps

a list of things to do that are free and outdoors

activity sheets that are both fun for children and informative for parents and carers.

This project aims to highlight the outdoor spaces in our local community for children and families to visit and connect with each other. So often, we are unaware of the great spaces we can visit with families and friends that are close by, and this project aims to highlight these spaces and create a free resource for families and education sites to use, to get outdoors and into the local community. This OBBY project will focus on the suburbs of Underdale, Brooklyn Park, Cowandilla, Lockleys, Hilton, Mile End and Torrensville.

Lockleys North Primary School along with Lockleys Children’s Centre are partners in this new project alongside the City of West Torrens, Cowandilla Children’s Centre and Natural Resources Management.

This project aims to:

highlight the outdoor spaces in our local community for children and families to visit and connect with each other

create a free resource for families and education sites to use, to get outdoors and into the local community, to be launched in October 2020

The following LNPS students have joined the OBBY project team and have met with the project team this term, Isaac (M3),  Liam and Nayia (T17), Lucas H and Lucas M (F10). They have also collaborated to create the Google Forms to be used for the consultation.

"The cubby building was fun because it gave me and my friends a chance to develop our teamwork skills and problem solve. Considering that our plan didn’t always work we had to improvise and persist.  The consultation was interesting because we got to see where people like to play in the local community. It was also interesting seeing what people like doing outside because of the survey."

Lucas H and Lucas M

"The OBBY visit from what I saw was pretty good, the cubby building was great and I am very grateful for the time, hard work and effort put into setting that up. The only problem was that me and Nayia made two of the same questions on the google form and they were both required so you had to put the answer in twice, other than that, everything went fine and everyone loved it"  Liam

"The OBBY visit was pretty awesome the cubby building was amazing!" Nayia

As a thank you to sites, for contributing ideas to the project, an incursion with Climbing Tree has been organised, and students participating in the survey will have time to engage in cubby building in our loose parts play space.

LNPS students have also volunteered as local champions and are sharing their voice within a working group level.  This will include attending consultation meetings with Mrs Saxon on Wednesday mornings, each term throughout the year.

Parents and carers who are also interested in being involved along  with your child are also welcome.  Parents are also invited to respond to the Google form survey using the link https://forms.gle/kUockgZhqHAqiaZy8 to give feedback for the OBBY project.
