Japanese Day - Thursday 23 June
On Thursday 23 June the Primary Years will be celebrating its Japanese language program with a matsuri (festival) titled Nihon no Ryouko (my Japanese trip). Nihon no Ryouko will see our students ‘travelling’ around ‘regions’ of Japan where they will experience Japanese cultural experiences led by our Year 6 students (our Japanese hosts).
As Kindergarten to Year 5 students will be acting as tourists or travellers on the day they are invited to wear free dress in appropriate clothing for that role. Our Year 6 students are invited to dress in white, red or black but can consider wearing something else that matches their leadership activity. A headband will be loaned to them for the day.
A Japanese snack option is available for pre ordering for students from Prep to Year 6 only. It supports the notion of travel to the regions of Japan with three delicious ‘onigiri’ rice ball snacks featuring local produce to match well known flavours of each region. The ‘onigiri’ will be wrapped in paper only in keeping with ‘mottainai’ (don’t waste). These can be ordered through the Flexischools website (please note that on the ‘Food’ page on Flexischools you need to scroll across to find the direct link to ‘Japanese Day: Thursday 23 June’). These orders will need to be completed by the end of school on Monday 20 June. Unfortunately, we will not be able to take any late orders.
Free Dress Day - Refugee Fundraiser
On Friday 24 June the Morris Council is holding a free dress day in support of Refugee Week. Morris students are invited to wear many colours to signify the diverse cultures within our community. A gold coin donation is welcomed and will be passed on to our local refugee community via The Migrant Resource Centre.
Student-Led Conferences | 20 June - 1 July
This term we are pleased to be able to invite you to share in your child’s learning through our PYP Student-Led Conferences (SLC). These important opportunities are an essential part of the PYP program; allowing your child a platform to share some of their learning achievements and demonstrate their developing skills for learning as they explain the many ways they are enacting the qualities of the IB Learner Profile.
These meetings will happen in the classroom at some stage between 20 June - 1 July, booking information has been sent to families. We remind you that these meetings are not able to be held virtually. Should you be unable to attend your booked time and need to cancel or reschedule your SLC appointment, we ask that you contact your child’s teacher via email to let them know.
Due to COVID-19 requirements we are only able to host the SLC sessions outside school teaching hours, sessions will be limited to before and after school times. No more than two adults per child can attend and we ask that you are mindful of social distancing whilst in the classroom environment to maintain everyone’s safe participation. If you have any questions you are welcome to contact Fiona Zinn (Deputy Head, Early Learning - Year 1) or Wendy Crow (Deputy Head, Years 2-6).
Physical Education Lessons for Years 5 and 6 | Monday 6 June - Wednesday 6 July
During Weeks 6-10 PE lessons, all students in Year 5 and 6 will travel by bus to Kingborough Gymnastics Centre for gymnastics sessions. The bus will leave school at 12.00pm on their PE day and return by 2.00pm. Please note that in Week 6 only Year 5 will go and, due to the long weekend, in Week 7 only Year 6 will go. Any enquiries please contact Lisa Di Venuto ldivenuto@friends.tas.edu.au.
Year 3 Excursion | Mt Pleasant Observatory - Monday 20 June
On Monday 20 June, Year 3 students will be visiting the Grote Reber Museum in Cambridge. Students will participate in a guided tour of the observatory including a close-up look at the "big dish" and visit the control room. There will also be time to explore the Museum which celebrates the work of the first radio astronomer: Grote Reber, and view short mini movies about space. This will connect to our prior Unit of Inquiry about communication and the way it has impacted people and society in the past and present; and our current inquiry which is investigating the way cultures explain phenomena and the scientific reasoning behind phenomena, particularly the stars, sun and moon phases. Part of the tour will be outside so please pack a warm jacket and or raincoat.
Primary All Schools Cross Country - Tuesday 21 June
The Primary All Schools Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 21 June at Symmons Plains Raceway. The bus leaves school promptly at 8.00am and will be back by approximately 4.00pm. Lisa Di Venuto and three other staff members will be accompanying the team. An email has been sent to the families of selected students with detailed information.
JSSATIS Cross Country - Wednesday 29 June
The JSSATIS Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 29 June at Rokeby Police Academy. Selected students from Years 3-6 will travel by bus leaving school at 10.15am and returning by 2.15pm. Any enquiries please contact Lisa Di Venuto ldivenuto@friends.tas.edu.au or call 6210 2228.
Kindergarten Earthcare Days Term 2 - Lenah Valley | Thursday 30 June
The Kindergarten children will continue to visit a site near the Lenah Valley Linea Park for their Earthcare Days this term. We will be going on Thursday 16 June and 30 June. We will be leaving school on a bus at 12.00pm and will return by 2.30pm. The excursions are part of our Sharing the planet unit of inquiry. We are aiming to develop responsibility, resilience in a natural environment. Please ensure that your child has a rubbish free lunch at Kindergarten, especially on Thursdays to help practise Earthcare and awareness about the impacts of soft plastic on our natural environment. Your child will need appropriate warm clothing for the forecasted weather and spare clothing packed for the excursions as we will be playing outdoors even when it is raining. The school has wet weather jackets and overpants that the children will wear if necessary, depending on the forecasted weather. You can also support them by encouraging them to carry their own bags to and from school since they will be doing this on our Earthcare days too. We are looking forward to seeing how their natural curiosity and wonder is expressed while we are there. Please contact the Kindergarten team if you have any questions.
Absentees
If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Morris Office (phone: 6210 2228, or email: morrisadmin@friends.tas.edu.au) and the classroom teacher before 9.00am. We appreciate your support in this process.
