Shorts Day/Big Night In
Next Tuesday 21 June is the shortest day of the year, a time to reflect and celebrate. The Clemes Council has organised a full day of activities to raise money for SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY, whilst relaxing and spending time with friends. The day will start with a sunrise walk from Clemes to the Domain, at 7.15am, followed by a catered breakfast on return to school. At the end of the day, we welcome students to stay at school to take part in organised activities including table tennis, Just Dance, pizza and a movie, finishing at 8pm. Participants in the Big Night In are requested to make a $5 donation, which covers the cost of pizzas and activities. There is no cost for the sunrise walk.
All participants in the Big Night In will need to complete the Operoo form before 4pm, Friday 17 June. All Clemes students are invited to wear crazy shorts with their uniform that day.
Contact Kate Baldry (kbaldry@friends.tas.edu.au) or the Clemes Council reps for further information.

Paul Dillon Parenting Presentation
6-7pm, Thursday 30 June in The Farrall Centre - Please book here
View flyer here
Parents, guardians and carers are invited to a complimentary presentation by Paul Dillon titled, ‘Risk taking’ – why do teens do the things they do? What can parents do to keep them as safe as possible?
Adolescence is a risky time. As a teen matures and becomes more independent, they experience dramatic hormonal changes, increasing social and peer pressure and have greater access to alcohol and other drugs. This presentation will briefly examine the history of ‘teenagers’, rebellion and the different ‘temptations’ that have existed over time. Using the latest research on the developing brain, it will also discuss why young people make the decisions they do during this time. Sleepovers, parties and gatherings provide teens with valuable opportunities to develop important socialising skills but are not ‘risk-free’. Some practical strategies and tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such events to help ensure they are as safe as possible. Masks must be worn.
University Applications
University of Tasmania - applications for the Schools Recommendation Program open on 30 June. This will allow students to receive offers as early as August for many courses.
Mainland universities - for nearly all mainland universities, applications are completed through the relevant tertiary admission centre, for example VTAC for Victorian universities. Admission centres open for applications on or around 1 August. Many mainland universities will also have early offer schemes. A guide to this will be available from Study Work Grow later this term. On time applications need to be completed towards the end of September. Study Work Grow will also produce a guide to applying in each state.
Scholarships - Students are encouraged to start their research on scholarships. These may include accommodation, merit or access scholarships. They can be accessed via admission centres, universities or colleges. Closing dates for scholarships is towards the end of October, however students must always check dates carefully.
Term 3 Co-curricular Art and Ceramics Signup
We will be offering two co-curricular arts activities in Term 3. These groups are open to Clemes and High School students.
On Monday afternoon from 3.50pm–5.00pm in Studio 2, A302, we will be offering an Art Club. The focus of this group will be on printmaking, painting and drawing. Art Club encourages students to explore their ideas in a creative way. Students can be guided by their own interests or respond to a range of pre-planned art making experiences. No art background required. However, this is also a space for existing art students to further develop their art practice. To join the group please email Luke Edmunds - ledmunds@friends.tas.edu.au
There will be one Ceramics group running in Term 3, on Tuesday afternoons from 3.50pm– 5.00pm in the Ceramics Studio. If you intend to continue with ceramics or would like to join the group please email Miriam Berkery - mberkery@friends.tas.edu.au
