The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is celebrating 10 years at Kingswood Primary school this year. Preparation is in full gear for our 10 year celebration. The gardens beds are getting weeded and prepared, menus are getting planned and the students are reminiscing about their favourite memories of the program. We love being connected to our community and can’t wait to share it all with you.

The year 4’s have been clearing out the winter weeds in the gardens beds. They have persisted and worked as a team to clear the garden beds near the water tank. The students have moved soil and topped up the beds with compost. They have planted pansies, nasturtium, snap peas, cornflowers and bok choy. All the students have been very keen to plant, but surprised about the amount of energy and effort required to clear a garden bed and how little effort and time it takes to plant a seedling!

The year 5’s and 6’s have contributed to the garden in many ways. Some have experienced propagating rosemary. Others have moved some vegetable compost from the back of the school to our front garden beds using shovel and wheel borrow. And some students have cleaned out some pots, so we are ready to spruce up our vertical garden. All groups have had to come back to the same core values and habits of mind when gardening; we thrive in a team culture, persistance and we are able to take responsible risks to get the job done.

Happy Gardening Kingswood!
