Mathematics

In Mathematics we have focused on  measuring the length of different objects. The students discussed the language of measuring the length, width and height of varies items. We found the we could measure using informal units of measurement such as blocks, counters or icy pole sticks and compare our measurement to our friends. We also found that we could use a ruler to be more accurate and measure formally in centimetres. It was tricky lining up the number 0 on the ruler with the start of an item then reading the correct measurement, but the children tried really hard.

Here are the children measuring their toys and ordering them from shortest to tallest.

Literacy

In Literacy we have begun to write procedural texts. A procedural text gives the reader a set of instructions of how to make or do something. This week the children were involved in a language experience of making pasta. This tied in without our Inquiry topic 'Celebrating differences' as we also looked at the country Italy and the people, language, foods and culture.

The children cracked eggs, mixed the flour, kneaded the dough and turned the handle on the pasta machine to create some delicious pasta to eat.

Now we have begun to write a procedure on how to make pasta so we can share this with our families at home.

Here are the children making pasta.

Child Safety

This week in our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons we have begun to discuss people we are able to talk to if we are not feeling safe or something happens to us.

The children explored and discussed people at school they could talk to and we developed three posters of who to talk to depending on the problem.

We discussed that:

  • The classroom teacher is the best person for problems in the classroom.
  • The yard duty teacher is the best person when there is a problem at play times.
  • Mr Steve, Ms Marion and Ms Naomi are the child safety team and they are the best people to talk to if I am feeling unsafe.

Here are the posters we made as a class showing who I speak to when I have a problem.
